RE: BMW M4 GTS: Review
Discussion
Owing to a cock up by my BMW dealer I had an M3 for a couple of days last year. I liked it (but not enough to want to suffer the cost of having one new). It had much more power than I could exploit on the road. So the idea of paying twice as much for even more excess power plus much less usability doesn't really appeal. You could have a normal M4 and a Caterham 620 (which would be quicker and more fun on track) with spare change.
Funny how these threads always become a "you could have these three instead plus a holiday".
Given the low volume and price, these are likely to be bought by people that can afford them as either an investment or to rag the nuts off and dispose of later. I can't see them becoming a desired classic, as it was rightly pointed out that it's too heavy, not homologated and also pretty garish in it's design in a way that's not looking like it's gathering too many wows.
I'd rather they did the CSL treatment to the M2 myself. I think a lot of people would consider a more focussed, tricked M2 that cost 25% more than the standard car in the way the e46 CSL did. I've had the e46 and can't believe the hype today as a machine but I can as a story. It's the only CSL since the 70s and all that blah. Does this new car have that on it's side, I don't think so.
If I had buckets of cash I wouldn't believe that this was a good investment.
That's why they're bringing in only 30. They might not be able to sell too many more.

Buy it , chase 911RSs. But as has been mentioned, most will be added to the portfolio, low numbers being the saving grace. That's why they're bringing in only 30. They might not be able to sell too many more.
It just feels like a marketing exercise and not like the engineers really did what they could do. It pains me to say this but it is not dissimilar to the Golf "Clubsport" in concept - new interior, remap and bolt on some new suspension and wheels.
It's like an 18 year old max power fan is in charge of their performance vehicles. Come on BMW, do something proper that you don't make any money on, maybe even lose some, just for the hell of it

I kind of like it and the noise, 30 sec a lap is a lot round the ring, if you boosted a std M4 to that power and lapped the ring what would the time be???, that would give us mere mortals a much better frame of reference to determine how much difference the upgrades have made to the M4 and is it really worth all that extra money..

So... buy a standard M4, drive it through Halfords and save yourself £50k.
I'm sure it's a wonderful, wonderful thing, but it just looks too far removed from OEM BMW to appeal to me. It's like they are desperately trying to make a GT3 marque which they can flog to people for silly money.

Well if I was looking for something like this I'd take a close look at one of these, how much are the V8 GTS's going for these days?
I like the looks & when a GT3/4 is around 100k+ I think it represents decent value in this day & age for a stripped down fast road/track car, Aston are charging 180k for their GT8 which will be slower than the M4.

Oh yeah...Water Injection...it's hardly new technology, is it?
Didn't Saab have a production car with water injection in the 70's?
Oldsmobile got there first with the Turbo Jetfire, and that used a mixture of distilled water and ethanol dubbed 'turbo rocket fuel' that was injected into the manifold to lower the charge temperature. This was in 1962.. Didn't Saab have a production car with water injection in the 70's?
I don't mind the looks as this looks like BMW having a bit of fun, the price reflects the specailised nature of the car. I'm still not sold on the looks though.
Just a short sentence
