Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet......have done the Alps, lakes, Cote dAzur trip in convoy with one twice and have to say its hard to beat! Absolutely beautiful inside and out, sounds lovely, Italian, fast and very comfortable....whats not to like!?

Maserati Quattroporte S 4.7

Car looks great. Very civilised. Correct attire, too.

Edit: I hope that is your wife and your daughter in the passenger seats and not somebody else's.

I have one of these.

Forget the range but otherwise fits the bill perfectly.

Totally agree. It's a much more attainable car got most PH-ears than many others mentioned. Mine was a 5.0 convertible but very quiet on a motorway cruise (with hood up anyway). I did two south of France road trips while I had it. Gone now due to electronic glitches however....

I like that 412 in the above picture.

As classic Ferraris go, they don't seem astronomical :-

This 1985 one is red

Values have sky rocketed on these over the years. I recall there was a time when a 400 was only worth £12-15k, as I tried convincing my parents it would be good idea to swap my Defender Tdi for one. But then again I was only 17 at the time...
Yes, they were down there with 308GT4s as the cheapest of the cheap. As I said earlier thread, my classic choice along with the Khamsin.

Vote for the British.

or for more luxury...

Vote for The Italians:
Probably the best if you have more than 2 to carry - you can travel 4 up in comfort (even if you're 6ft in the back!).

If your budget allows this also fits 4 6footers with ease. Lovely place to sit and Italian V12 ...

For the slightly more unhinged v12 driver...

I guess a 911 is a GT car too but I find them boring in comparison to all the above.

For me I think people are missing the point of a GT ... It has to be 2 doors, Hard top, Petrol Powered.

My personal vote would be for the latest vanquish or Maserati Granturismo MC shift (or 4 seat Mc Stradale)... But alas Im massively short of that funding.

Has the BMW 850 been mentionned yet ?

i don't know if we can do it, but a competing website for used car sales has a new add for one at below 8000 GBP at the moment ... it does sound like the prices of 2009 to me ...

Love this subject!

Do the v12's mentioned genuinely get 3-400 miles?

The v8 Bently Conti is probably the perfect car but with the worst image!

No mention of a capri?

Is a Capri really a GT car at all? Bearing in mind the original question was for the best GT car. But hey, if you think it's the best, that's cool with me - there's no right answer! But plenty of wrong answers haha.

As for my original question - I wanted some suggestions for a genuinely good GT car - most of my miles are fast roads, I don't commute, and I love cars.

So it was kinda for some ideas.

And only last week I bought this (yeah, I've mentioned it once or twice in other threads but I don't care!)

Genuinely fast, comfortable, and with enough room inside for a few weeks on the road while two-up.

Some cracking suggestions on here though. If only I had an unlimited bank account... Ha!

To me a GT is something I would pick up the keys for, from the collection of cars sat in my garage of course, to pop down to Lake Como in.
I'm stealing this as a requirement. Brilliant!

You could drive a 1 litre eco boost there and back, likely with no issues. But given the opportunity, would you take that, or something else like a Quattroporte or 550... Easy choice for me!

In which case your new purchase fits the bill perfectly. It is exactly what a friend on mine does with his Chimera (no issues either).

I recommend taking the coastal road from Monaco through Genoa then up via Milan (out of rush hour) and on to Como. Did it in my Esprit, amazing.

I've been down to the Côte d'Azur a few times - usually on bikes though. Theses a ton of good roads all over! Les Route Grande Alps is a good ride. I very much enjoyed that last year...

This fits the bill...although don't put your door down too hard or the 10 cylinders will devour petrol rather quickly!

Well the two other holes are probably where all that petrol is going spin

Not suggesting a capri as my choice!! I was surprised a capri wasn't mentioned, we've had other classics, something like this would be alright wouldn't it?

I bought a W12 GTC when they first came out - and promptly drove it to the Med for a holiday. I thought it was the perfect GT.

I also had a Ford GT which I drove to the Med. Not the perfect GT - but was fun all the same.

Both of them are beauties. I'd love to spin either down to the south coast of France.

I think one of the most comfortable and classiest GTs would be a Bentley Azure. Top down motoring, a lovely V8 and old school slush box too. Not dynamic at all, but with a beautiful lady in the passenger seat and convertible stowed away... cruising on the Côte d'Azur, sea view to the right, Alps to the left, heading towards Monaco, and then Northern Italy... When I'm a multi millionaire!

Either that, or the gull-winged Mercedes 300 SL, in silver - but I fully acknowledge it's not going to be a great drive on the autoroute. But, once you're down there... what a vehicle to drive! Totally the fuel of my dreams.

Nowt wrong with that Capri! I really like them. The old Essex V6 sounds good with a full stainless sports exhaust too. I've fancied one for aaaaaaages!
