Most likely a stolrn vehicle on fake plates and the seller is trying to offload, claiming "he doesnt have the V5"

Possibly but its had those plates on at least a week, the same length of time that our car went back to its origanal plates and the checkers all recognise our car. but I don't even know if the plates were changed I shall enquirer tmoro!

Do proper garages actually do this, shocking if they do as that's one reason we only buy from garages is to save all this hassle!
Also how come the insurance companies can recognise the plates?

if it is legitimate:
bring up the gov.uk/ Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Agency (DVLA) database and submit a full vehicle enquiry;
https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dv...

It will bring up the results.

Another way is a less detailed but accurate way;
visit www.eurocarparts.co.uk and type in the reg, if it comes up as the vehicle it is accurate.

If you don't mind please send me a link to the advert so I can help you confirm that it is a stolen vehicle. If it is, report it to Autotrader and the DVLA immediately.

If it is a main dealer/franchise, (e.g Lookers Group) it is extremely unlikely that it is a stolen vehicle as all cars on their forecourt lare subject to an advanced HPI Check and inspection. Same applies to large "car hypermarkets" such as CARSHOP and Cargiant. I would be wary of any cars sold by usual run of the mill household business, private seller, dodgy dealerships run by foreigners (no racism intended - I am south Asian) or anything sold in a shady area like Keighley.

High performance cars such as the Porsche Cayman and big SUV's like the Cayenne are most likely to be shady, especially if they are advertised at an abnormally low price. Be wary of hot hatches, but I would be slightly less wary if it was your run of the mill Vauxhall Astra Life owned by some old bloke in town with a full service history - THIS IS A MUST.

Happy searching - please send me the advert so I can help you.

Cheers, the DVLA is bringing up nothing, europarts brings up the car?!

The DVLA is the most crucial part, so if its not on there, its not legit. Eurocarparts uses an outdated version.

Can you please copy paste the make and model? And a basic description for any clues about its authenticity

I have just used the DVLA linked check that we use at work and it comes back blank. That normally only happens if the VRN is incorrect. Unless there is a credible explanation, I suggest that you walk away.

There's obviously something amiss as there is a warning on the search that came back. Interesting that there's no CO2 figure either.

Perhaps ring the 0870 number and find out.

Hi, NK64 FMX comes up as a Vauxhall Mokka 1.7 Diesel on eurocarparts.com

However, on the DVLA MOT check - there is no details, which is suspicious as there is no history on the vehicle (and it should have it regardless of the reg as the car once had the VRN NK64 FMX)

The car was registered in Newcastle. Is the car being sold near Newcastle?
If it is being sold in say, Devon, its likely to be dodgy as no one would drive across the country to buy a 1.7 Vauxhall Mokka.

Sounds dodgy. And which checker is that? Looks very helpful.

Have another.

One of my cars was registered in Northamptonshire and was sold by a dealer in Kent.

One of them was registered in Canada. Maybe they were both stolen and being sold with dodgy paperwork.
Or, here's a thought. They were perfectly legit.
