RE: Audi RS2: PH Heroes
Discussion
Last time I saw one of these was, believe it or not, many, many years ago on an episode of Blind Date (can't have been much on TV that evening!) where the two finalist contestants were being treated to a series of high performance demonstration drives.
The RS2 was up on the high banking (at Milbrook, I guess) being pedalled at very high speed by none other than the legendary Roger Clark whose normally taciturn features broke into a smile when the girl turned and asked him: "Are these seats waterproof?"

As a lad I saw one of these new in the local "prestige" dealership that I used to worship at. Same colour and all! I had the obligatory Countach poster on the bedroom wall but as soon as I saw the RS2, that was it!
Near sure they only done them in that "Nogaro Blue"Always loved these. A proper Audi...amongst the S2, S1 etc. And although all the modern stuff is "better" in a sense, they are just all samey and mundane. The RS2 is just special!!
In fact there were 13 different colours, including 3 blues, 2 reds, white, 2 blacks, grey, silver and green (I cant remember all of the names and codes though)
To be fair, saying it was 'one of the fastest' surely should be quantified, yes it was faster 0-30 than a McLaren but really only by virtue of its 4wd allowing superior launch (it's gearing might have been a factor, but stand to be corrected on that). There were many other cars around that were faster, albeit most were Porsche, Ferrari and other exotica.
if that sounds like crticism, then it is tempered by the fact it's on my shortlist of cars to own before I kark it...

Am selling mine if anyone is looking for a black RHD one... epic car and prices will soon follow classic Porsche IMHO
Soon? I've not seen on on PH for ages, and there are only two on C&C: One is RHD with 127k on for £30k, the other is LHD and on the continent for £60k. Looks like they're already there!rtz62 said:
Er, no, they did it in more than Nogaro Blue.

Speaking as a pedant they didn't make any RS2s in 'Nogaro Blue'. It was called 'RS Blue' although to be fair it's exactly the same colour. In fact there were 13 different colours, including 3 blues, 2 reds, white, 2 blacks, grey, silver and green (I cant remember all of the names and codes though)
Here's a gratuitous picture of mine on a set of 'Design 90' winter wheels. The lower door skirts/mouldings or whatever they were called were starting to rust on their mounts, I was quoted nearly 1000 euros to replace them.
I looked at one for sale in Northampton 5 or 6 years ago, it looked very, very tired. Another one for sale around the same time had been well bent and not repaired very well according to the Audi forums. Yet another had changed hands 2 or 3 times in a short space of time and it was a bit of a mystery who was actually selling/owned it. Then there was the dealer that was buying anything that came on the market and sticking 50% + on top. I gave up looking.
Wished I bought one 5 years ago.
I suspect 'good' B5 RS4's will be going the same way.....,even high milers are steadily climbing.
Sadly the RS2 was a magnet for thieves.,,,,,I remember back in the 90's one being stolen from Scotts in Sloan Square being used as a Ram Raid get away vehicle. It was found some weeks later in a lock up with Audi 80 plastic wheel trims screwed into the Porache alloys as well as being trashed. Absolute criminal.
There always was a good collection at the Audi Driver day organised by Autometrix publications at Castle Combe.....I had some good tussles with them in my AmD VR6 during 'it's ' heyday.
Still have a soft spot for the B5 RS4 though.

Love these, back years ago when working in a petrol station saw one with "THE WHO" as the number plate and i have always wondered who the owner was as i never saw him just saw him driving away as i was busy off the till and someone else served him and considering the cost of the car and the plate did make me wonder if it was a member of the band .
Amuses me that the thing many people, including myself, think or comment on about the RS2 is the turbo lag.
It's very much of its time, and we / I should appreciate it as such; I look back on the Escort Mexico and RS2000 I owned and never think, or hear people say, 'actually, they're a bit crap to drive'. And I tend to think of my beloved 3dr Cosworth and RS500 in the same way, lots of lag and not actually that great to drive compared to modern stuff.
I guess the thing is that you can't put a price on nostalgia, and the RS2 is iconic. Yes there's 'faster' RS Audis now, but are they as involving, and will we look back in them as fondly as we do the RS2?
That's why I'd rather have a Ur-Quattro rather than any current RS, it's the nostalgia thing.
Of course, if funds allowed, I'd have an RS2 in a flash.....

For anyone seriously after one, I've put my blue RS2 on the market in the last week. It's the one featured here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=121...

Roger Daltrey used to have an Audi 90 quattro 20v model some years back ( a friend nearly bought it ) so maybe he's an Audi fan and moved onto one?Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
