I was tempted at a Golf but didn't think It was worth the extra cash so if I had forked out about 27 grand I would be extremely miffed that these much better models (including the R) were around.
Really? I'm sorry but that makes you sound so sad. If you truly have that mindset then why didn't you just part with more cash and get the Golf which is the better car?If VW make a better version of the Polo GTI, which they probably will at some point, will you instantly be gutted and then have to get one when you're perfectly fine with your car at the moment?
You just sound like someone that will never be happy and has to have the best and latest version of a certain car.

I didn't need the extra space as it's already a 5 door and has ample room for my needs. So it boiled down to the fact I would have been paying close to 10 grand more for a car with 22ib/ft more torque and 20ish horsepower. It has basically the same engine just downsized and it also borrows the same XDS diff that the Golf uses but it's heavier. Top gear did a test and the Golf was actually slower than the Polo (albeit from a standstill, drag race, no corners etc)If VW make a better version of the Polo GTI, which they probably will at some point, will you instantly be gutted and then have to get one when you're perfectly fine with your car at the moment?

So that's my reasoning behind it.
Also I know it's a naive and stupid thing bit I like to think a car is built to be the best it can be so when a newer model or updated model comes out of course I will want that. It's like the 1.4tfsi Polo, some would argue there's not much difference and it would make more sense financially to get that. Possibly but it doesn't even have a manual option and last but not least there is one important factor we always have to think of and that is......the wife!

Almost went for a Golf GTI myself. In fact i had one on order but then my circumstances at home suddenly changed and had to get something cheaper which lead to me getting one of the cheap A4 leases. As nice as the Audi is i wasn't excited about it at all. The GTI is a car I've wanted for a while i was genuinely gutted when i had to cancel the order So that's my reasoning behind it.

I do like the Polo GTI's and the deals on them are significantly cheaper and better value than the Golfs. But if i got one i'd just be making up for the fact that i couldn't get the Golf in the first place and settled for it's smaller brother. Something about them that i just don't like and i can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe that's just me being daft and a massive hypocrite

1300kg is suprisingly light for a modern car of this size. I wonder how far you could go with carbon fibre doors/boot/bonnet/roof/bumpers.
Quite a bit. I didn't weigh my carbon bonnet but it feels easily half the weight of the original steel item.Carbon doors, wings and boots are available but are horrifically expensive.
Basically £1200 per panel. So add £6k easily to the price of the car. Plus the expense in repair/aftercare it's not worth it for most people
I think it's a very impressive car and while the Megane for example may be slightly more engaging, the Golf offers 105% of the performance with 150% of the refinement which is quite a good thing.
I'm a big fan of this car anyway.

I know what you mean. I do love the look of mine but it is a bit "square" next to the Golf. For me it was just about economics. I could have easily afforded the Golf. The Polo is bought outright (not showing off) so that wasn't the problem it was just the large amount of money extra for what (in my opinion) isn't a great deal more. I mean heck the interior is virtually identical! It fits me the missus, my son and the dog in with ease and we have never really been into large cars anyway I do like the Polo GTI's and the deals on them are significantly cheaper and better value than the Golfs. That's in base Gti spec. I did meet someone that bough an almost new Gti PP for around £21-22 which is much better value and is perhaps something I could have looked into.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, once you start taking back seats out of a hatchback it loses it purpose and then rightly should be compared to a different kind of car.
And once you do that it's ability becomes less impressive as it's competition becomes a whole lot more talented.
I think it would be very interesting if you shed a some weight off the megane Cup-S or the CTR and gave it some sticky tyres........

Power (hp): 310@5,350rpm
Torque (lb ft): 280@1,850-5,700rpm
So it produces peak power at lower rpm than peak torque? Interesting..
as long as an engine revs over 5252 RPM, it's not possible that it produces less power than torque (for that particular Rev's).Torque (lb ft): 280@1,850-5,700rpm
So it produces peak power at lower rpm than peak torque? Interesting..
BHP = Torque (lb.ft) x RPM / 5252.

Think yourselves lucky.
When I was a callow youth in the early 80's (1980's, not 1880's) your choice of Golf was GTI 8v or 16v, and the only way to go faster was to wheel yourself on da an to somewhere like GTi Engineering (Silverstone? Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) and have a gas flowed cylinder head, uprated manifold etc. Power increases weren't 'that' great but we're good enough in period. I had an Escort Turbo at the time which was fairly easy to tune but never had the style or class of a GTi 16v, modded or not.....

Rallye?
The Rallye was twice the price of an 8v GTi 3dr, albeit it had the Synchro system fitted, and boxy arches a la ur quattro. And was LHD of course which means that apart from the other facts mentioned made it into something that couldn't be compared to other Golfs.
Someone mentioned about installing a rear seat and seat belts into the ClubSport S; may I venture that if you were involved in any sort of RTA where injury was caused to, or by, the rear seat passengers, the I surance company would have a field day, and no doubt try to wriggle out of paying as the car wasn't type-approved for a rear seat.....?
