Just get a 500SL: same engine / less metal / less £££ smile
No flared arches, no Porsche assembly line, no mistique, no general lunacy in terms of “vhy fit ze biggest engin in ze E klasse? - becoz ve kan, ja?”

Epic, epic cars and to me strangely more desirable than the E34 M5. Except the Touring. And that comes from the biggest ///M fanboy ever - just ask barchetta boy if you don’t believe me

No doubt the E is a special thing so easy solution is to just have both, especially for those Orwellian moments. smile

barchetta boy has been well versed into the usefulness of winter boots in.. ahem... winter for a while. His previous chariots of choice for daily duties - a 280TE and a Golf IV were always shod in the appropriate winter boots ... I think he was eulogising the particular abilities of his M3 on winters, rather than a general fascination with this new fashion of driving on winter tyres in the winter...

In other news I’ve just done the school run in snow and -2 in my E 46 M3 with winter tires, and thanks to cheburator, Porsche brakes which feel fantastic. A good afternoons work!
Sounds good, just curious which model of Porsche brakes exactly go on to the M3 ?

I believe -

996 / 986 calipers with custom brackets. Then choice of standard CSL discs or 2 piece. Some people even do the rears too.

The front kit that I fitted to his car comprised of custom brackets, CSL front discs and Boxster S/Carrera 2/4 front calipers and custom SS lines from Hel

The rears would be Boxster S/Carrera 2/4 rear calipers, standard E46 M3 discs, custom brackets and custom SS lines from Hel

I would take credit for the above alongside a former friend of ours. I bought a set of front and rear brackets from MoVIT in Germany thinking about fitting Big Reds fronts and Porsche 996 rears to my Z4MC because MoVIT had done the same to the G-Power Z3MC. Once in my hands we experimented and discovered that the super cheap at the time Boxster S/Carrera 2/4 were also a perfect fit. Hence a kit was made. We sold in excess of 25 on the cutters forum as well as eBay. Then proper "players" like Thorney and Simpson jumped on the bandwagon and started to offer kits very "close" to our design, I fell out with my mate and the BMW BREMBO BRAKE UPGRADE EMPORIUM promptly "folded"

On the whole I didn't mind - I did not get rich, but we offered a great product at a great price and made enough money that my Z4MC and his CSL sported a shiny set of F and R Porsche branded red calipers for free effectively. The cars did not stop quicker, but brake modulation was superb and we never experienced fade on track. Win-win...

I assume the same 4 pot calipers are used on the 987 Cayman S ? The discs on the M3 look bigger than 318 mm diameter on my Cayman.

The reason I ask is according to Wiki an E46 M3 weighs approx 1549 kg and my Cayman S recently weighed in at 1390 kg, my brakes feel great on the road but on track I would say they only just about up to it and after a while they struggle (this includes decent fluid, pads, lines, GT3 MC and additional cooling but standard discs) and many in the U.S. upgrade to the six pot Porsche calipers / aftermarket or just bigger floating discs, so in theory standard Porsche 4 pots may struggle even more on a 10 % heavier car like the M3 when used hard, but this appears not to be the case unless it is just down to the bigger discs and better cooling ?

The CSL disc is 343mm in diameter and is floating so you will always get two things which are better than the Cayman - a lot more leverage and better cooling. A bog standard M3 weight wise on KW3, Nankang Semi-slicks and with these brakes was clocking 8:05 BTG all day long with a dip to 7:55 on a banzai lap.

I am risking opening a can of worms here, but a lot of drivers complain about brakes on track days until they learn how to use them properly. Barchetta is one of them - at our last track day at Bedford he went toe-to-toe with the above M3 and was absolutely magnificent, matching the other car for pace on stock brakes with Ferodo DS2500. And when all was finished yesterday Barchetta remarked along the following lines - "The OEM set up with DS2500 was very good, but the Brembo's just look amazing and offer better modulation, hence I am chuffed to bits..."

So my advice is use less brakes - they only slow you down smile

I quite fancy an E64 650i convertible. Partly because you can get them for less than 10 grand and partly because I love the engine in my 550i so whats not to like? Any horror stories about the roofs self destructing? Anything I need to know?
Had one for a few months. One of the best engines I have ever enjoyed, married to one of the worst gearboxes I have ever hated.

Give one a long drive, and if you can put up with the seemingly random, shunty, slow, indecisive gearbox, good luck to you.

Ha kind of thought as much, sounds like bigger floating discs is a good move at some point, last time out I did also have EBC yellow stuff pads which were **** and had started to crumble away when I inspected them afterwards.

I have the same box [and engine] in my 550i estate. Its ok i think not perfect but the big 8 banger goes whatever gear its in. My estate has recently had new fluid and i dont know if its that or the adaptations being reset - just regurgitating what I've read in here - that made the difference but it feels a bit better now.

I have the same box in my X5 4.8iS and it is absolutely superb. Unlike the 5spd ZF that preceded it and was fitted to the big V8 E39s and some jags etc the 6-speeder is adaptive and learning all the time, but most importantly, it actually remembers the settings. The best way to teach the box how to behave - I took the barge around the Ring for three flying laps. It was a delight to use afterwards - rapid upshifts, it would hold gear on trailing throttle and also be snappy on a downshift while in manual mode. Lasted about a month, then the school run took its toll silly

Yes it is. You have to be gentle with your throttle adjustments. On the motorway I tend to leave it in M6 or it will drop to 5 a lot. Maybe it has learnt that when I'm on the motorway I use all the power regularly.

I saw one last week. Coming op direction to me. I turned left at a junction and when i saw it I almost hit parked cars on the left as I was too busy looking at him coming towards me and was giving him too wide a berth. Looks small now obviously.
