I keep looking at elises as a commuter car... small, light, good on fuel-ish etc. Make sense in my mind!

I used to do 70-80 miles a day in various Elise/Exige for many many years and would do so again in a heartbeat. My commute was A/B roads so was ideal for them, wouldn't want to do motorway commute in one though.

S2 is the better bet as a daily as they are a tad more refined, better and less leaky roof and easier to get in and out of due to the lower sill.

Thoroughly underrated version is the 1.6 imo. Ran one for a while and it hardly used any fuel, was quick enough and with the trd airbox it sounded great too.

Ok thanks. Passed this on to a friend who is deliberating what to buy. As an x biker I think he wants something quick and has showed me some Elise ads but I dont know which is which. I've tried going on about my 996 which is fresh back from a serious service and feeling lovely. But the known problems are putting him off them and the 986 which he had at a similar time to me back in 2004.

My mate used an S1 as a daily for years. Great on fuel, comfortable enough (once in) and reliable.

The biggest problem was the roof leaking like a sieve in anything more than light drizzle.

It can certainly be done yes, and I did for many years.

It's just that the S2 is just that bit more rounded

Mine leaked a little. The wiper not touching the screen was a bigger issue.

I never had an issue with the wiper on any but a real bug bear (sp?) of mine is crap wipers so perhaps the guys in the workshop knew that hehe

But think of all the wear you avoided on the wiper blades.

Exige was a daily for me for a while until I bought the CSL, if all you need to transport is yourself to work it was absolutely fine. The grills and various bits don't stand up to salted roads very well and if you're in a cut and thrust commute you can feel like the smallest thing out there.

When you're looking up to the Peugeot 106 next to you can feel a little...exposed?

Indeed, it is in traffic that you realise how low and small they are for sure. You do feel very snug (in a pleasent way) in them though and the view forward is very 'baby Group C' cool

For my old commute route they were pretty much perfect

I enjoyed driving my Elise in London. Small, nippy, easy to drive and always felt safe inside those big sills. Perhaps I was lucky with good wipers and heater and a leak-free roof too.

I like the idea of a 1.6 S3 Elise as a daily driver (except I don't like the idea of needing a daily driver hehe ).
