I think the only reason the RUF looks a little off is the headlight and the indicators.

the headlights should not have clear lenses, and the indicators should be thicker and amber

I think that would go some way to making it work better. The rear end work well I think
Those and the wheels are the main stand-outs in terms of mild visual dissonance (wheels are a little too big and modern for my taste, even if not offensive and possibly required due to brakes etc.).

The Singer is a work of unobtainable art but there are many nice restomods around (not sure about that portmantjective but ho-hum...). I'd be deliriously happy with a Tuthill (ala Harris's "Kermit") or even just a tweaked 964. Eff it, I'd "settle" for a tweaked 996 hehe

BTW, Bertie coups rule, ok?

On a set of smaller classic style wheels with bigger tyres that could look ok. It reminds me of how some 964s looked in the late 1990s when TSW blades were all the rage.

They're too flat. Almost McLaren f1 rip offs but bigger.

yes Anything that wide needs a bit of a dish / concave feature IME, especially on a silhouette of this vintage. Otherwise it look like a jelly-mold rather than a car.

Remember that the Ruf is an all-new car, on a unique chassis and carbon body - very different from Singer etc.

I do and I like very much. More than singer? I'm not lucky enough to do anything but speculate on the reality. Aside from the too big wheels I think that Ruf is a lovely thing, especially the fact that it is a new type approved car. That alone makes it a worthwhile effort, in addition to mouthwatering spec.

I can't believe that Porsche hasn't set up its own subsidiary doing back catalogue stuff (you can probably get the same from the factory in some cases but I guess singer etc. is the route to a full car).. I'm sure there was a Russell Bulgin column speculating about what Porsche was going to do with its 993 tooling with reference to Levi Strauss Co. White label jeans hehe

Morning.

Ref the green Ruf; I feel as though it should work but it doesn't in my eyes.
Agree. Singer please.
Wheels are too big on the RUF IMO.

Speaking as the owner of a 993 AND a W124 I heartily agree!

Along similar lines and musings;

Was thinking that I wish Alfa would produce a modern day Sud Sprint. Mito size (although thats no longer in production) with a fizzy engine, cute looks and a chassis to die for.

I suppose really a modern day Sud Sprint come Puma esque affordable yet desirable thing. I have similar hankerings with the 500 Abarth in that it is a very desirable, almost baby exotic, affordable and useable toy. But a great driving baby Alfa coupe would be fantastic.

I wonder how much (or if its possible) would need to be thrown at an early used Mito to get somewhere close.....but I guess then may as well buy an early Abarth.

Maybe possibly.

Loon - I feel you. Alfa's deserve a proper revival. It's been due since 80s if not earlier! A sud-type deal would be awesome. But so would a modern bertie (#nevagonhappen). Sigh.

I think you'd be well-off with a 500. When I see them they seem to exude the same sense of usable fun as R53 Minis (Cooper S+ models, natch). Some of the special editions are quite appealing (Bi-Posto 695 sans sequential per favore), despite a slightly-too-tall proportions they have a real mischievous roller-skate thing going on, plus mod cons. As a DD something like that could work (trying to get the GF to trade the MCS vert for Works GP - am I transparent or what? hehe )

Indeed. I took the Sprint out for 15mins yesterday to blow out the cobwebs and there is something that a finger can't be put on about them/it.

Not fast but the whole feel is quintessentially Alfa that can't really be described. The feel through the wheel, the throttle response, the noise and the way it feels almost 'human' is oh so desirable.

I know that it can't be replicated in a modern due to modern nva and dbw throttles etc but as flawed as it is the Abarth comes as close as I've experienced in a modern.

Now if Alfa did something similar in a new car then I think they could get even closer.

R53? Love mine, they're just great fun to use and abuse. Handy bit of storage room in the back that makes them quite practical too

Sourced an R53 GP a couple of years ago, was an utterly fantastic thing and very desirable imo.

Some stuff for the 996 looks reasonably priced. I especially like the floor mats.

Yes indeed. The best modern ones are R53s in my view, although the R56 isn't bad (I find the current model abhorrent to look at as well as un-mini like in size). Handle like the proverbial housefly and I love the meaty steering and the "eminently brappable"* (as per deR's Dunk 76 almanac of Evoisms) nature- clearly designed by folk who like driving enthusiastically. Yet they are habit able day to day. I don't go in for mildly pastiche styling but these get away with it due to being nicely put together and just great fun to pedal briskly. Like all good driver's cars, they reward driving with sporting intent cool
