Are these any good?
Surely be cheaper to run than an older Porsche / m car / rs Audi - or virtually free by comparison ..

Having played around with the E46, E9x and 996 platform I think that in terms of running costs the E46 M3 would be the cheapest... It is also the easiest to work on... If you don't need the 4-seats - perhaps the 997 would edge them all simply because I like the interior better than the 996, but I have never spent time in a leathered 996 - my GT3 is just cheap and Toyota-esque vinyl...
E46 M3 - resistance is futile...

Out of your list, I'd pick the E36 M3 that isn't on it.
To add to this my mate just bought a B7 RS4 Avant and is loving it. I've never been in one [or his!] but I believe they can excite. Might be worth adding to the list if you like dogs.Cheburator mk2 said:

Based on previous experience. I think it would have to be a CS though, or similarly fettled, which takes the cost beyond that of the E9X. E46 M3 - resistance is futile...
My man maths is obviously such that I usually justify running costs offset against minimal depreciation.

Been there, in Evo form and just didn't bond with it for some reason.
::This: plus an E46 steering rack could be enough to change your previous experience.ferrisbueller said:

What depreciation?! My man maths is obviously such that I usually justify running costs offset against minimal depreciation.
I bought my 2003 E46 M3 SMG for 8k in Feb 2017
- 87k
- Carbon Black non Sunroof
- Heated Caramel Leather
- Harmon Kardon + NAV
- FSH + 3 keys + wallets/books/etc
- Matching new FK453s all round on 19s
- Zero rust or dings
- BMW and I inspected the subframe and it came out with a clean bill of health
- surprisingly clean underneath considering that it was looked after, but at the end of the day also used daily
Owned by a squaddie in Germany - RHD UK Spec German delivery - and then 3 friends who sold it to each other before I stepped in.
Costs so far:
2 x RTB bushes - £100
1 set of front discs and pads - £300
SMG Pump motor repair - £75
Inspection II - £180 in oils/filters/coolant/gaskets - did the valve shims myself
Current mileage - 92k
I am confident that I would easily get £8.5k private sale straight away...
A CS would be nice, but I think they are over-rated for the money... Very tempted to add CSL bootlid, roof, front bumper and an airbox (I know the owner of Streamline Aero), but this is meant to be my do anything standard car. It has been refreshing not to worry about mods and if they would last more than 1hr...

CS is appreciably better than the standard car but not three times the value and not more than an E9X. A facelift E46 with uprated rack is on the list.- 87k

Spanish only for me at this juncture, also.
My 996 cost me about £1500 last year. That was for a big service, coffin arms, water pump, front pads and braided hoses. Coffin arms weren't desperate, but I'd just bought the car and they were going through the car so I thought that we should just get them done. IMS and bore scoring aren't as common as people think on the 3.4. I think it's probably gone up in value by roughly what I've spent which is a handy bonus. It's a great car maybe not the quickest but show it your favourite country lane and there isn't a huge amount that will keep up with it, certainly not for the money

I like the M3 Spanish box, - my brother's Convertible and race car, as well as my Z4MC were a delight (although it had a ZF box fitted due to dimensional issues in the Z4), but Mrs Cheb refuses to use her left foot in London traffic, hence the SMG...Spanish only for me at this juncture, also.
Also, have you tried the off-set bushes mod (Z4M) for more castor on the E46 - I found them to be very good and added some steering feel and weight...
