Is the range of these M5s as bad as I've heard? 18mpg and a small fuel tank means less than 200 miles maybe?
The Cayenne does perhaps 20-22mpg when I'm late on continental motorways but at least it has a 100L tank. I had to wince when the bill to fill was 140 Euros last year. That wasn't at the rip-off autoroute price either...
fking annoyingly useful SUVs. In some parallel universe Porsche would have made some sort of 'touring' estate/hatch the size of a 5-series with the nice 4.8 V8 from my car and weighing say 1700kg, i.e. a good 200kg lighter than most opposition like the sports cars do.
Then again, that sort of car seems to appeal only to men, while the women just want SUVs.
Yeah - the range at UK M-way speeds - 75/80 was about 250miles. In Europe it could drop considerably. 70ltr fuel tank for a 5ltr V10 lugging an estate was just stupid. Overall fuel consumption is par for the course - the M5 was as thirsty as my 928 GTS Manual - the difference is that Porsche had the forethought to fit a 86 litre tank to the old girl, making her a true continental cruiser. Half the time in the M5 was spent plotting a course to the nearest petrol station.
As for your request that the Porsche V8 finds a home in a better driver’s car - I think Porsche heeded your call very well with the Panamera Sport Turismo. Which is a shame in a way as that pushed back the re-introduction of a 928 successor, perhaps to never...
I’m not sure if it was posted on the thread but that Ferrari FF dressed up as a modern 400/412 would serve a similar purpose too (albeit a different price point).

Like a Panamera for instance?
Way too big unfortunately. A quick google suggests 9cm wider than an E60 5 series. No bench seat and a rear window line that is far too high for kids to see out of. And a tiny boot!L100NYY said:

In these days of niches in niches, I’m surprised that Porsche haven’t created a 928-successor 2 door Panamera coupe.
That's basically a 991 911 though, they are roughly the same length (4.5m) and width (1.85m)Similarly confined back seats.
Land Rover discovery sport vs Range Rover evoque same size.
So many Mercs (and BMW even) are similar to each other but different marketing...
V8 front engined GT vs flat 6 Rear sports car could be sufficiently different?
There again I’m not the target market so maybe my view isn’t relevant.
2 door Panamera Would be cool though.

This for me please. Mechanical refresh, tidy up the interior and pop the bits back on and I'd drive it like thathttps://angliacarauctions.co.uk/classic/saturday-2...

I think the E60/E61 is quite small these days. I'd hazard a guess that the latest 3 is similar in size.
I had a proper shock when I parked the E46 M3 next to a F80 M4 - width wise was about the same. Length wise - oerrr! - the M4 was about a foot longer! The GTS looks positively tiny against a 991 and minuscule compared to a Panamera
I would be the first to put down a deposit for a 929 if they ever make one and it has a V8...

997 is pretty much same size as 996. 981 looks massive next to 996. Well 996 looks tiny next to almost anything. It's smaller than a modern polo.
Remember parking the GT3 next to a new shiny 991.1 GT3 at the Ring in 2015. It looked like a 3/4 replica model. Another reason to think that as we move on the 996 and 997 would definitely become classics... (that’s if we are allowed to drive them)...Auction

Morning all, had two E36 tourings in 320 & 328 flavours about 20yrs ago. 328 still one of my wife's favourites to this day and it would manage Stanmore to Dundee on one brimmed tank (just!!). That also included a slight hoon over the A701 to Moffat/Edinburgh to break up the M'way schlep. They didn't like the snow much, even with an 8 stone Japanese Akita in the boot.
Anyhoo, mentioned on here around a year ago when the snow was falling about carbon airboxes for the Cerb. Man maths helped to justify cost as did the fact they weigh 868gms each versus around 1.9kgs each for the originals. Service time soon and plans for some cam timing and a switchable TwinMap set up.
Sticky.
