They did, but registration offices did not change over all at the same time. Those running short of plates started with A suffix plates in 1963; as stated above Isle of Wight, for example, started in Feb 64 with ADL-B; All changed to the suffix year-identifier system by 1965, such as Hampshire whose first was AAA-C.

I saw "S2000" on an S2000 at the weekend, I thought it might be a show plate or have to go in the C124PPY thread, and some may think it still should due to the spacing, but apparently it's a legit registration on a 2009 GT Edition 100 with 18,000 miles on the clock.

I probably have a shot of it on my dashcam but I'm sure you all have imaginations capable of picturing it.

My car check app has failed me then, "S2 OOO" didn't come up but "S2000" did - I presumed it to be "S 2000" and https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk seems to confirm my theory. Given the car it was on I was willing to let the spacing slide.

Your app's ok. We buy any car failed me as it lists both S2 OOO and S2000 as the same Honda.
I'm claiming a win on the plate you saw being C124PPY though as it could represent 2 registrations that exist. biglaugh

The shift to suffix plates was phased in between 1963 and 1965. So, yes A came out in 63 but only 14 authorities started A issues, with Middlesex first in February. The vast majority (over 100) authorities started at various points in 1964 with B, and the last 22 authorities started with C, all on 1/1/65.

And this is what happens when I reply to a thread a few days old and don't check that other beards have already answered it!
