I'm :confused. Why surprised?
Probably because we associate expensive plates with expensive cars?

And far from it... some of the great plates have been in family's for years and past down the generation's worth far more than the cars there displayed on... it's more common to see the "crappy" plates on expensive cars unfortunately... oh i'm beginning to sound like Jaguar Steve...getmecoatbiglaugh

Pre Sept 2001 Numbers were all issued with letters relating the original authority countys then after that the format changed to local memory tag-year eg PR 08 XYZ = 2008 Preston the latter numbers were just in a alphabet order so many potential good numbers just never came up which is why DVLA decided to sell such numbers through the Auctions from Dec 1989 and create DVLA select etc, obviously there has always been some held back though censorship but some words now didn't have a meaning many years ago.readthumbup
So for the Le Mans afficionados in 2024 the LM24 HRS plate will be issued in Stanmore, or be auctioned off by the DVLA for every carowner in England to bid on?

And yet, they quite possibly have more money than those with supercars and multi-million pound houses.

The owner of VAL 1 lives in Nottingham. He knows he has a valuable plate. But he won’t sell as it has such sentimental value. Although he does call it his “retirement”.

It may well be that the plate has been in the same family for multiple generations. The plate may have more sentimental value to the owners rather than any potential financial value. Perhaps they have children or grandchildren who they intend to pass the plate down to. It's a nest egg, but that doesn't mean it should be sold to fund a flash new car or extravagant lifestyle. I always enjoy seeing high value plates on older cars, always more interesting.

I agree entirely.

Admittedly I’m far from wealthy and have just spunked £5k up the wall on a plate that could have been spent probably on ‘better’ things than an acrylic piece that sits on the front and back of my car. That said, £5k wouldn’t be a game changer in terms of my lifestyle and I see it as money sat in assets in the meantime.

For those with 6 figure numbers adorning cheap cars, I do often wonder why they don’t sell up. It’s perhaps part of the fascination when they are spotted. They may well not desire a nice car and live a great lifestyle but equally if they aren’t a car person, why have any wish to not cash in on the plate on their car. None of my business either way of course, but I do find it intriguing.

Get a good plate and see how much you enjoy it. Once you’ve sold it your enjoyment is done.
My family would also be upset if I sold mine. I expect a few on here would rather live under a bridge with their number plate than sell it. smile

Probably should be in the category 3 thread but in the last week I’ve seen two horseboxes: one was JOC 33Y and the other was F121 DAY.

Hi Folk

No photo unfortunately but I saw recently 2 Y on a 1980's vintage Nissan Micra! Looked in fairly good nick surprisingly. Hate to think what the plate is worth and as for why it is on £20 worth of micra is anyones guess!
