(re TUR80 as a plate)
Not been pedantic but the XR3 Turbo hadn't been invented either...and never was..!,only produced under the RS brand starting in 1985...av185 said:
Although if spaced like that it is illegal and seen as being influenced by Chaverry therefore crappy.
Obviously much much cooler to leave it legal and original.
Given that the first time I recall seing it was on a brand spanking new XR3 Turbo, I'm not sure Chavs had been invented at that point...Obviously much much cooler to leave it legal and original.
I new the guy that had the plate in the early eighties and had it on a few 911 Turbos, the last time I saw it was on a Bentley Turbo R in the nineties but havn't seen him or the plate since...

I'm fairly sure I remember it on 911s, too, but back in the mid '80s I could just about afford a ten-year-old Maxi, so I wasn't paying all that much attention to real cars
Still a good plate though!

Is it's legal and appropriate for the owner then it is a good plate.
1HAM is crap if it's meant to say the owner's name, Ian.
However, correctly spaced on a butcher's van it's good.
I can see you are making a point about subjectivity and objectivity, which is usually the root issue in most disputes here over whether a plate is good or not.1HAM is crap if it's meant to say the owner's name, Ian.

However some plates are surely beyond question?
You can't seriously suggest that a plate like 1 HAM could under any circumstance be considered anything other than a great plate.
What your point misses entirely is that your example of 1 HAM has enormous intrinsic value, far beyond any 'personal meaning' it may have to the owner or envious admirers.
And as high as the intrinsic value of 1 HAM is, it's lower still than 1 HA, or 1 H, but it's still a great plate.
There may be no hard and fast rules on here about what is or isn't a great plate, but I think most know one if they see one. He gets some stick but I believe Jaguarsteve often comes from the right place, making a similar point.
Where I would disagree with Jaguarsteve is that I can also appreciate many (but not all) of the sort of plates like B4 RRY, LO57 KEY or even K9 DOG - just as the market does, too.
Generally these plates tend not to be the crème de la crème as per a single single, or a number one plate (unless it's something like P1 LOT or CHR 1S) but they are still very worthy of this thread in my opinion.
And yes, I know 1 HAM was a fictional example you used to make a point, but I don't think it was very well made!

Craig - as I recall, you used to live in Glasgow. The last time I saw TUR80 it was indeed on a 911 turbo, probably circa 1982 and it was parked outside Charlie Parker's in Glasgow - predictable!
No.. I'm a Yorkshire man,but I did buy the plate from a guy that lived in Glasgow 30 years ago.... CRA1G said:

I saw TUR 80 on a 911 (white I think) sometime in the early 80s in North London
Reminds me. A mate worked for a small company that built Ford competition engines in Wiltshire in the eighties. The boss had a lovely 911 Turbo with a TUR 130 plate. It’s still on a Porsche now according to the DVLA checker. Wonder if it’s the same car. What is the big deal exactly with incorrectly spaced number plates anyway?
I know they won't pass an MOT, but then technically neither do smaller plates or de-cats etc. No issue there.
When you check MOT history online it doesn't show the numberplate with spaces... Presumably ANPR can still read them...
I get the ones that have, for example, a 13 that looks like a B are a bit naff, but is taking out the space so much of an issue?
