You must have had a bad example.
I agree, the brakes and handling of the Metro turbo were excellent (probably class leading) even if it was a little underpowered compared to it's rivals and only had a 4 speed gearbox.

One of my friends had an Avonbar 1340cc metro turbo which was hysterical. Galactic turbo lag and torque steer, but quite a hoot to drive back then. Pissed off a lot of so called sport car owners.

Indeed smile 4 pot AP calipers on the Front IIRC. They were tiny ones, quite cute actually.

They had around 93 bhp as standard so it was not too difficult to get them to the 100 mark which was comparible to the Mk1 Uno Turbo's 105 bhp (IIRC) and the early 205 1.6 had about that too I think.

I remember Avonbar smile I used to read all their adverts for bits but could only dream of such upgrades being a poor college student Lol.

The neighbours had a Metro turbo from new back in the 90's. It was never on the road, absolute heap of crap. The final straw came when it started to show some rust coming through within 6 months . IIRC they traded it for a convertible Escort.

My late Dad had one, 1984 A plate in Cinnibar red and about a year old. At 18 months old the gearbox started making a rattling in fourth - failed mainshaft bearing. ARG replaced the reliable, never-go-wrong A Series brass caged bearing with a slimmer nylon cage bearing......so the engine and box came out (the down pipe bolts were a bd) and a new A Series brass cage bearing fitted. Cue a bit of farting about on the dyno to get the boost pressure up and it recorded about 80 at the wheels so even with the transmission losses....about 110 bhp. It was some 205GTI that could get past that and with a pair of Konis on the front it handled really well. At 2.5 years old, it went into Hartwells Oxford for a new pair of front wings as they were just starting to come through - absolute crap really.
