I like both cars, but I think the Focus is better value, the reason one is discounted is likely because it was two expensive in the first place. The Focus will likely have rock solid residuals as well

Doesn't matter. This car will still be about as interesting to drive as watching paint dry like every other Audi barring the R8 and perhaps the RS6.
The RS6 is not 'interesting' to drive either - It's a one trick pony. Aside from the brutal acceleration then ther's nothing of interest imho. Handles like its on loose rails and changes direction like a heavy canal barge

If they do make it at the 30K mark, that would be stepping on the R's toes which everyone raves about. This would be its biggest downfall for me especially as with the R you get a lot more car for your money too.

Good old autocar making stuff up again

Multiple door options on an RS - not on any recent model

Choice of gear box - not on any recent model

Big funky wing - not on any model

Wide arches - not on the 8V RS3 (Audi learnt ppl buy them for top whack regardless so why spend the money )

It's also not on the leaked road map which did have the 4 door RS3, biturbo V6 RS4 and R8

Didn't stop them selling every RS3 they could make for 45k +

If it happens expect to pay 35 + 5 for the mandatory options

Which model year did you drive?

Shame. I'd have thought that the S1 would lend itself more to a "Clubsport" variant. Less weight rather than more, a smidge more power than an S1, and generally a less blunt tool than the RS models.

The RS3 has a 5 pot going for it and is the same size.

The RS1 would be a smaller class with not as much power as a Golf R

The A45 AMG with a similar spec can be had for ~£35,000 through carwow (discounted approx 10%) so in reality very similar in price.
How many buyers in this sector do not tick options? very few i suspect

most will go for

aero pack - £1500
night pack - £1600 (mandatory with aero)
dynamic plus - £1400
Met paint - £600
Sports exhaust - £500

and probably the premium pack to get the pano roof and Harman Kardon sound - £1900

so that's another £7500 over list, but that is OK its a premium brand car, they cost more and generally you get a higher quality product

I see this point often and I still don't understand it. Those fast depreciating options are not compulsory so it doesn't really matter what other people decide to waste their money on. If you want a "bare bones" one, you can get it.

At 30k this car is going to be very hard to justify, especially when you consider a £600 Revo stage 1 software remap of an S1 will see 315 to 324 ps and 320lbft to 360lbft comfortably, which this essentially is.

A Golf R is only 20kg heavier and marginally larger but will have 20hp more and bags more standard spec (such as ACC etc).

Having said that, RS products have never been the best value cars in the VAG line up, but arguably the most lust after. I'll take a 3 door manual in sleeper black with a 1.6TDi badge please.

Seconded. Had my RS6 just three months before selling on again, brutal just brutal in a straight line, but numb lifeless barging bargeness! Sure I'll get funny looks but just ordered an M140 as a sort of replacement - was far more involving to drive and wasn't a whole lot slower!

I'm curious how they can get a dual clutch gearbox in an RS1, but not in an S1? When I bought mine I was told there wasn't room for 4wd and an auto box.

Well I may upset a few people here The S1 is currently the only car in my fleet .I do not really think it needs more power .I have never any stage driving it thought I needed more power. When I bought it what I was after was a small reasonably quick car that was fun to drive and fairly unassuming .I looked at the Golf GTI/R and did not need the bulk, I viewed a Fiat Abarth and thought I was just too small for my needs.
I think the cost of this would push it dangerously close to its bigger brothers. Not to say I would take it for a test drive .

I agree but think Audi should give it the power it's always deserved. If it's got quattro/haldex why not utilise that to their advantage and give it the power levels it's competition could never handle. Currently an S1 only has 16hp more than a Fiesta ST Mountune but a whole lot more weight. I just thinking branding it an RS1 rather than an S1 'Performance pack' or facelift is where they've missed a beat.

You're not really comparing like for like here - a modified ST vs a Standard S1. A Revo map on an S1 takes it to well over 300bhp.

It will be again a boring car.

No mechanical diffs on the quattro system and full of Electronic Ediffs which brakes the spinning wheels instead of doing it mechanically!

I have an RS3 i passed it thru to my wife after i was in sweden with the car. I really got bored with the electronic diffs braking the spinning wheels. The understeer it has, no manual handbrake.
