Has whoever wrote this article ever driven a 15yr old 306?!
Rattles, squeaks, bangs and squeals are 4 features they didn't mention!

Typical Evo/Pistonheads nostalgia...
They were like this when younger than that !
I remember mine was 7 years old and in the cold the radio didn't work and it had an annoying squeak from the top glove box.

I remember them coming with P6000 tyres which were shocking. Upgraded to some Bridgestone potenza RE720's which were great.

7.8 to 60 sounds awfully slow for this weight and power. Pretty sure my old man's Quashqai would smoke this piece of crap. No thanks
...this is my favourite ever comment on PH
Can't remember many Pug hot hatch owners thinking 0-60 was important. These cars weren't designed to be straight line cars.

I've had 4, in various degrees of value. The styling and handling are just so right, the engine makes a nice noise and it's really lovely thing to kick along in. Just punting along a B road is great. Actually pretty solid too, 3 of the 4 I had were rattle free and the one that did rattle was a bit of a hound, interior wise, as someone had committed some crimes in the name of ICE

Buy a good one, fit new bushes and dampers and enjoy a simple, fun hot hatch.

That would of been around the time I scrapped mine... S reg in Diablo red?
S Reg in black. S34GWH you are missed. It was rather tatty when I sold it on though.

I miss my Phase II moon miler a Hell of a lot. It was going to cost £800 to get through its MOT... in hindsight I wish I'd kept it as its replacement (a sheddy SportKa) has cost me even more than that in initial purchase and repair costs.

My old one hasn't been taxed since 2011, hopefully it's in someone's garage waiting a full rebuild. Doubt it though. Anyone on here know the fate of V349 LOM (Diablo Red GTI6)?

I have one of these bought it last year to scratch an itch and guess what its still only drive. Its a cracking car faster than the stats suggest and more than the sum of its parts. It is a very quick car that will embarass much more powerful machinery as some XF and Audi owners have experienced on the M6. It has proper mid range grunt in any gear and doesn't taper off till the red line...the balance and compliance is exceptional on any road surface and on B roads I've kept STis with twice the power more than honest with them just managing to pull away on the straights. Its a very comfortable as a daily and a great motorway cruiser. Most people always point to the Clio 172 as a better option but i disagree the Gti6 is a full size car with loads of space and comfort that a Clio couldn't hope to equal. Some have mentioned squeaks and reliability, well mins on 180K and doesn't squeak or break down. Service intervals are 10k and need to be adhered to. Parts are cheap and they are becoming a rare beast on the roads. Its a beautiful looking hatch with just enough flare and haunches to show theres something going on there and did i mention the engine note when you're pressing on or heel and toeing down the fine 6 speed box? It never fails to surprise anyone who gets into it how quickly it builds and maintains speed.

I think one of the reasons the pure acceleration stats look poorer than smaller relatives such as the 106GTi and Saxo VTS is, that in the case of the Rallye certainly, the figures came from an Autocar test conducted in wet/damp conditons.

The road test in EVO in drier conditions was about a second quicker to 60 and that advantage carried through to three figure speeds

EVO Magazine had the Rallye down as 6.9 to 60 which I reckon was about right when comparing my old one to other cars. As it's been said here earlier, it's so much more than the straight line performance with these cars

Tes, that's right...and the EVO test GTI-6 was just a few tenths behind at 7.2

My daily french hatchbeast, a black 306 Rallye under my ownership for 10+ years and it's totally stock bar a longlife custom(very quiet but opens up after 4k) cat back exhaust system installed in 2006. It's currently sat on 146k and counting. Last month I refreshed old with new Peugeot OEM parts: shocks, springs, TRE's, droplinks, pbushes, front arb's, top mount struts, bumpstops, upper & lower engine mounts and now i have a new car on a 17 year old shell biggrin

If you have one, drive it enthusiastically to get rid of the rattles and squeaks, it always works for me biggrin

Just bought a 1997 Phase 2 in Diablo Red. Feels very quick and tight. Full service history and new tyres. Needs some bushes on the gears, a couple of minor dents PDR'ed, a quieter back box and Bob's your uncle!
I had a 205 1.9 GTi back when this was a new car and this drives in the same spirit but feels a lot more balanced and is a more comfortable environment to sit in when blasting a back road to smithereens. I don't yet feel I've taken it to anywhere near it's limit but I do still need a month to build up the quadriceps in my left leg... :-) then I'll be using it properly!

I have been recommissioning an early 1997 phase 1 GTI6 with just 48K on it.

Just got the brakes and engine/box to fit and then it will be done.

I can't wait to drive it as they get great reviews and will become a modern classic soon I think.

How's the project going? Mine is fantastic. Had it for 3 years now and still very tight. After I'd bought it I invested in a new clutch (which has done wonders for the sciatica that I'd begun to develop down my left leg...) - at the same time got the gear box checked and a new starter motor popped in, since they are easily located once the clutch is out. Later on got the gear bushes sorted too.
Wondered if you've had any exhaust issues...? My centre section blew on 3 replacement attempts (aftermarket copies) so bit the bullet on a Piper cat back (as OE Pug exhaust proved impossible to source) which is essentially the only 'mod'- insurance don't seem to bat an eyelid at it, which is a relief.
Getting bonnet and roof resprayed due to lacquer peel and that'll be the final piece in the jigsaw! :-)

Now selling my Pug :-( It's on the PH ads now
Thought I'd put a final update on this (now old) thread to say what a joy it has been to own. As many have mentioned, the handling is spot on. The steering feedback very accurate. I have never had electrical issues, squeaks, bangs or whatever. It would smoke or keep up with most cars out there. The only car I was taught a lesson by was an RS4, but I can be forgiven that - I had just smoke his pal's Mondeo ST220 ;-) (which in turn would smoke a Quashqai ;-) ).
One thing I never expected prior to purchase, was just how solid it feel when driving it and the faster you go it just seems to grip and feel very planted. I remember sitting behind a new Civic Type-R on the M4 last year and it tried to shake me off - to my surprise it made little ground and eventually pulled over to let me past (the speedo had a 2 and a 5, let's just say) and it felt like I was just doing 80...
It has been a pleasure to own, but my family of 5 are only growing taller and this is no longer justifiable on the driveway. Very sad to see her go.

Jeez these are going for a pretty penny now. I bought mine for £1,500! If I still had it and with the extra I'm now earning I could have kept it. frown

What happened to the Rallye?

A combination of very greasy roads, over-enthusiasm, budget rear tyres and the 306's fondness for rear axle rotation resulted in the picture you see here.
Pirelli p6000’s happened to the 306.

It looks like in 2020 you'll do well to even find one of these for sale! Shame as it's an itch I never managed to scratch. The 3 door 306 is such a lovely looking thing; those "cyclone" alloys are, to my eyes, one of the nicest wheels on any car.
