If this has had an 18k restoration it's an absolute snip.

That is way too cheap, isn't it?

I've always liked these and, as always, suspect I missed the cross-over point where I was looking and when they were unloved and (almost) worthless.

This seems very reasonable to me, and is comparatively cheap.

The Alpine was my favourite car when a spotty teenager (aged 14 in 1967)
Never bought one but enfed up with an MG Midget (after 2 years looking for a Frogeye).

!973 ish I was walking past the bomb site car sales near Charles Trevelyan College in Newcastle (lunchtime car watch) and saw a white Tiger 260. Went in for a look, was offered it for IIRC about £250..... decided against it. (I've always been stupid).

Used to know Tony Eckford quite well (same Motor Club) he used to rally the Tiger to great effect.

Happy days.
Sadly the Alpines tended to dissolve pretty rapidly

Compared to others for sale yes, but maybe the bubble is starting to burst, or there are undisclosed problems. Was considering the R129 as Alex knows but that ticks many boxes including nice colour. Hhmm, can I get to Northampton after work tomorrow?

Lesser classics on eBay seem to be going very cheaply right now compared to a year ago (at least that's my perception).

Middle incomes are being squeezed. Those higher up the income curve aren't buying marginal calls.

Yes, I'd agree with that. No-one should be buying for investment, for sure.

Did you go and see it Skyedriver? I e-mailed the seller via the site but didn't get a response.

I had assumed it was a scam it was so cheap.

Hardly surprising he was overwhelmed with responses.

I got in touch via the MB Club and wanted to go give it the once over at Anglia's yard but just couldn't make it work with the travelling.

Had had a substantial restoration at Erik Gorter but he needs a new kitchen and so it's on a kind of fire sale.

I can't speak to the quality of the work but if I hadn't been busy buying R129s then I'd have made more effort with it.

I really want an R129 but I feel like it has to be the 5 litre... is this sensible, or are the other flavours worth a shot?

I'm keen to find one around £7500 and fettle it (minor bits) etc myself as I think it would hold cash well... opinions?

Notwithstanding your budget, the 1-5 thread is the font of all knowledge on these, and there are other threads running too in the Mercedes (or Classic, can't remember) section. At your budget, you should be able to get a really good car. Might be worth PM-ing Zonergem; he currently has 3 and is both an expert and looking to offload!

I had the 5.0 and loved it and would recommend one, but I do think the 320 is a worthy alternative. The SL is a cruiser rather than a sports car, so you don't drive everywhere full-on, so performance is probably moot most of the time. That said, the 8 cyl engine makes a fantastic noise and, all things being equal, I'd hold-out for one.

The key is to buy on condition though, not necessarily engine. You need to decide whether you want pre or post facelift. I prefer the early cars but there isn't much of significance between them bar aesthetics. Look for full service history and no rust. A pano roof is nice to have (later cars). Above all, check that the roof works, then check again. Trim, panels and roof repairs are pricey, and make sure that repairs really are within your capabilities before taking on any sort of a project. They are terrific cars though, and holding values very well - there is a school of thought that they're already appreciating, although you can still pick them up around the 5-ish mark. I would strongly recommend one.

No Allan, Was going to be a bit of a travel and what with the house sale (in the process of falling through for the second time) I decided I just didn't have the time, stamina, patience, mental agility. To quote a neighbour also selling at the moment "the more I deal with people the less I want to interact with the human race".....

I can relate to that sentiment!

Car now sold. Sorry to hear about the house sale - fingers crossed it all works out.

I have CDG's 5.0 and I love it. Must go and wake it up from the winter slumber! I think the v8 helps make the car. They are also rather heavy so the extra power is welcome.

I might try my luck over on 0-5... despite being 2.5 over the top... hehe

And when I say fettle... I mean clean, service, maybe replace a few simple bits, I don't want too much of a project. But yes, I definitely want a cruiser more than a zoomer.

After having it repainted I cannot afford to ever sell it!

If the 240Z didn't exist then I think I'd like the 280ZX rather more, but since it does I'd always know that i'd settled.
