Not if you want a nice engine, it won't.
I found it a great engine actually despite the disappointing sound, but I accept other might not like it.
And I think that's the rub - there's a lot of people who want the performance/kick from an engine and don't care about sound, there are those that want driveability/flexibility/responsiveness, and there are those that want sound/drama. Some want two of three, and those of us that are greedy want all three! biggrin

For anyone who doesn't place sound as a priority, the 718-S is probably pretty mega. And such people clearly exist as we now exist in a market where "diesel cabriolet" isn't an oxymoron...

Likewise for some people the F-Type will tick the boxes because of sound/drama/looks, and the less-than-perfect handling and lack of genuine feedback won't matter)

Still love the 5-pot Audi lump though - if I've got to go FI that makes a pretty compelling case...might need a different platform to put it in though...

I find the F-type noise quite artificial. It also overpromises. The car sounds very loud...even when it's hardly gaining speed. If noise is a deal breaker then difficult to beat the 981. Thankfully there's plenty of recent ones available!

About sound: back in the days when I was a teenager - 70s - we changed the exhaust and used pantiehose for airfilters wink Or am I saying weird stuff? Even the Ferrari gang stick tricky bits to their red rears.

I agree: the Porsche 718 Cayman S is a remarkable driver's car, and it may indeed represent the best new Porsche available to the Porschephile today. The 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman S has also been selected as the 2017 World Performance Car of the Year by 75 automotive critics from 23 countries. The three top finalists were the 718 Cayman S, Audi R8 and the McLaren 570s. A properly equipped 718 Cayman S PDK (the car to buy in my opinion) with 20" turbo wheels, the lowered chassis, sport chrono, etc. is around $100,000 US with tax. For the money, it is an excellent machine. This variant of the 718 comes with the variable vane turbo geometry. The 911 turbo 10% plus steering is telepathically responsive, and the car devours corners as incredible speeds. You'll love the car on the twisting back roads, and you will love how it rockets on the highways. The sport response button (part of the sport chrono package--a the button that shuts the wastegate) is a blast on an open stretch.

The Porsche doesn't really do whole lot for me. But, to be fair, not many of them do so it's just personal bias. The Jag would probably be my heart's decision but i'd be secretly wanting the V8, which kind of spoils it a bit. The TT RS would be the one my head would tell me to buy. I do like my VAG stuff and i do like it's usability day-to-day and how low-key it is.
