190d 2.5 out for the first proper run of the season.
Continues to impress how it can lope along beautifully yet get smoother the faster you go.
Just clicked 75k, spend 4 figures last year doing lots of unnecessary stuff such as shocks/springs etc etc so this year it's only getting oil.

After many years of having some love for the Rover 75 a few weeks ago I became hugely disappointed.
It was actually the actor Mike Baldwin's old car (Due for sale soon I believe) and was the diesel version, but in my eyes and to my ears there was simply no match in the quality of ride to my Jag x350.
I realize that there is/was a price difference between the cars, but my love for them has gone. Pretty sure the petrol would be better, but I won't be trying one after my year of jag ownership.
From what I read it appears there's not that much love for the later x350 (mines a 54) compared to the 300/308 and I really have no idea why. I find the whole package of the x350 an absolute bargain, yes it's not quite as sleek looking, but the ride quality I find superb and have enjoyed every one of my 5k miles.

I have to admit to X350 XJR ownership, so might be slightly biased
Down at the Palm Tree house they are offering this rather fetching C240 Elegance. Very full specification: leather, air con, electric heated seats. Lovely colours. I have a feeling these may come back into vogue. I put 70,000miles on one of these between June 2001 and March 2003 and it never really missed a beat. For someone who wants very refined transportation, this may be just the ticket.

He does take a good picture.
In other news I spotted another 124 in my favourite colour:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1989-MERCEDES-230E-CREAM...
But all is not what it seems. The car was sold back in March for £1,650. The mileage then was honestly put at 120,000, too. The seller presumably is getting rid because there is something up with it.

Shows how much I know about the bloke and Soaps.. I thought that was his real nameI know pop trivia stuff
It was only the fact the kind gentleman who gave me a lift back from my local garage told me the history and I had heard the name.

The supercharged engined versions are almighty though (thanks other Alec for demonstrating).
I should probably know this, but what were the major differences between the X300 and X308.
And how do you turn off the remote locking "BLIP" on the x308?!
I am finding I am very relaxed in my XJ8 - I drive slower than in any of the mercs strangely enough.

I can only imagine that the XJR is pretty impressive ,I simply didn't go for one as probably about 90% of the time I'm ferrying my 83 yr old mom around and don't think she would appreciate me unleashing the beast.I have to admit to X350 XJR ownership, so might be slightly biased

Definitely more modern! I do like the X350 for a newish car, but down at the lower reaches of thread budget, only rather dodgy examples seem to exist as you might expect.
Well I think I got a rather nice example just over a year ago and paid just under £6k with 67k on the clock with FJSH. I'ts not going anywhere but if it was I would assume it's probably in thread budget by now.I noticed not long ago browsing out of curiosity (as you do) and there were quite a few low mileage ones In or just above budget.

Slightly confused as cannot see mileage in earlier listing? If a FSH wouldn't the mileage be obvious?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1989-MERCEDES-230E-CREAM...

Odd 28k mileage around 2011 on the mot but otherwise shows a slow progression on logged MOT's, would be interesting to see what the older ones say or if the pre speedo change ones have "disappeared".

High mile late W140 S600 in interesting/differentcolour out of budget,
Posted here despite the out of range asking price as there seems to be lots of Merc beard knowledge on here, and 5-20k is a v quiet thread.
And that this is probably a 5k car to most.
I'm keener on this than othesr for the honesty. The 230k milage seems perfectly plausible for a well used well cared for car of this age.
Is there anything to look out for?
I think the asking is high for the milage, but these cars can take it.
Thoughts gratefully received,
Thanks chaps

The mileage will not be a problem if the car has been properly maintained. That's a big if. But probably no bigger than it is with any w140 v12.High mile late W140 S600 in interesting/differentcolour out of budget,

It's hard to tell from the ad: it's all a bit incoherent. The pics do not suggest a very clean car; the interior in particular looks tatty.
I think the price is optimistic. But a thorough inspection may yield a lovely car. The colours are very nice.
The wheels are wrong: 600s had a different wheel as standard.

I may be wrong (I was once before) but iirc this is a thread reference to the dealer choosing to place his wares outside of a palm fringed location somewhere in North London.Presumably he operates out of a lock up that looks less salubrious than the 'maison du palmier'.
Likewise a car placed on gravel will attract more positive comments than unpointed crazy paving with oil stains. Other stains are available.
Perhaps we could publish a heirarchy - pea shingle / ballast / type 2 / hardcore etc.

O/T - He lives in a flat overlooking Portishead Marina. Used to see him in Hall and Woodhouse, you can have a conversation with him one evening, and the next time you see him he has no idea who you are. His memory's a little bit shot but he's a lovely chap.I know pop trivia stuff
That w140 is a lovely thing.
I predict a steady stream of similar cars coming to market in the near future as the new ULEZ implications start to be digested. Using an old petrol barge to pootle around town will become an expensive hobby in London from the autumn and I foresee many owners offloading these cars. Good news for non London based bargistas

Totally agree on the ULEZ, I'm expecting a glut of interesting petrol machines to crop up (and probably diesel as well, perish the thought!).
It does mean that post-2004ish petrols may be going up in coming months as owners of W140s et al move to Euro 4 compliant cars. Certainly the holy trinity of Euro4 and pre-huge tax will be getting a nudge upwards imo.
The less said about the gauche X358 the better...
