Fellow bargists, I wish to purchase another vehicle as it has been just over a month since my last purchase. The itch i wish to scratch is for a Mercedes, specifically, one of these
However I know very little about them other than they're known as the "TN" series, and they're very scarce to find. If anyone hears of one for sale or finds one do let me know! and if anyone knows more about them and would like to share some knowledge on them id be extremely grateful.
They are an elegant design and I understand possess very high quality design and build. I don't know more than that. I've always hankered after the larger but equally elegant range which was ultimately styled Vario. A useful thing to possess, a van. However I know very little about them other than they're known as the "TN" series, and they're very scarce to find. A bit steep at 10k but as a Vario model it's a 2005 816 D. In excellent condition.
Strip out the mobile library in the back ( a couple of racks) and there you have it. Your very own T1.

It's Bought. I've just driven it 160 miles home. Amazed at how smooth and quiet the 1.8 is. I wasn't expecting that. It cruised at 70 down the M1. It's on its original dealer plates, still has the original blaupunkt and has a massive history file. Lovely condition apart from it needs some quality tyres - any recommendations? I use continentals on my 124.
Super work. It looks like a great example. They are surprisingly comfortable on the motorway. W00DY said:
Shame it's been cocked up with those ste doors, otherwise I'd love to turn that into a camper.
Heading off topic here but this predecessor model is interesting: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Benz-507D-Vario...Nice ad as well:

"For the discerning casualty" - if there was a board of quotes from this thread, that would be on it. Brilliant, thank you.r129sl said:

I've some form with the 507D. A generous friend of my father owned a ex Snap-On van in the 90's, all converted into a very nicely fitted out four berth motorhome. He kindly (stupidly) asked me if I was interested in carrying out a few bits of woodworking jobs in exchange for pretty much unlimited use of the camper as he didn't use it much. It didn't take me long to think about it. Many trips with random girlfriends and several festivals/boys weekends away were undertaken. Happy times.
It drove very much like a 7.5 tonne truck. It wandered around in the wind, the steering wheel was the size of a dustbin lid, and the gearing was incredibly short. First was a dog-leg, stupidly short and used only really as a crawler gear: the done thing was to use second and let the glut of torque pull it away. But the woeful 70bhp from the (probably a lot less with 300k+ km's on the clock) actually did a fairly reasonable job of keeping the thing at a steady 55-60mph on the motorway, although steep hills were a different story. And it was engineered like a tank: absolutely bulletproof levels of build, quality as was the norm for Mercedes. He sold it for a measly £6k: I suggested four of us chuck £1500 each in, and my procrastinating, faffing mates ummed and aahed too long.
I'd absolutely love that ambulance.

Dunlop Blu Response work well on W124s and are not expensiveI was always surprised by the 1.8 190E. Good little engine and the car doesn't lack go. I suspect Mercedes specified a diff ratio to make each model pull well and buyers tolerated the resultant higher revs when cruising
A manual 190E in white would be the ultimate bangernomics car for 90% of us

Hmm, Mine has 'Landsail' tyres on which are fairly new and I wanted to change them but didn't really see the point. I personally like Michelin but would also like the same brand as would have been fitted from the factory - any ideas? I'd also want the wheels done at the same time which will be more expensive!Max M4X WW said:

The data card should reveal what make of tyre was fitted at birth.jke11y said:

A pleasing segue into the world of caravans etc.
I am getting to an age where the notion appeals however I just can't pull the trigger on it. On the other hand, something like this would be a no-brainer:
I used to buy carpet from a Belgian company, and on a visit the owner and I started chatting about cars. He took me into one of his warehouses where one of these sat (more or less identical to the one in that pic) - €500k plus he told me. Said it's a bit of a nightmare actually going anywhere in it campsite wise as people are constantly wanting to look at/in it. Got the full tour, was epic inside. He bought it to tour with his disabled son which made a lot of sense. I am getting to an age where the notion appeals however I just can't pull the trigger on it. Edit; found a pic

I can imagine rolling anywhere in this would draw unwanted attention, particularly when you reverse your Mini JCW out of the integrated garage...
