is it true about unpopular colours being better on these, or is it just an old wifes tale?
It's true. It's something to do with the process for cleansing the equipment. They were meant to do the process every day but skimped and did it every week allowing some kind of micro-organism to grow in paint storage tanks. This affected the paint's anti-corrosion properties. For some reason less-common colours don't suffer so much. Also day one cars. There's a long and technical report on it somewhere in the public domain. Re: CLS. My dad has a 320CDi with the clever dampers and even in the comfort setting it is miles too stiff.
I can see why, when it looks the way it does, the Sports 2 setting should be crazy firm.
But when they knew the car was to be sold for motorway ennui, I cannot understand why the comfort setting is, umm, not.
It does look absolutely fantastic though.

What's the real situation with this engine? Lots of scary stuff on the net about sumps, pipes et al, how do threadists rate the risk (I'm thinking about it in 6 series cab form by the way)golfer19 said:
Pleasant enough and a bit of a sleeper in SE styling.Lifted from the retro 0-5 thread. It's a nice car, in a great colour, with the feel to the ad of a doddery old boy selling his pride and joy. And mainly just to share the new word of the day, apolostry (which, by the way, is a fetching tan velour).

Could prove useful in navigating through rush hour traffic! Been lurking around this thread with interest - my 13 year old three cylinder diesel Polo had it's first 'major' expense last week, when it's PAS pump met with a sudden demise overnight. Didn't get much change from £500, which is realistically not far off half the car's value. But decided to go ahead as it's otherwise a good car that's not really wanted for much in the nine years I've had it. That and the fact I've recently put 4 new Uniroyal RS3s on and replaced the timing belt and water pump last year means I need to get my money's worth.
However, a gratuitous shot for your consideration, picked up on the 30th of September.

Three point eight bags. 114k and FSH.
Have already invested another £1k into it, although, man-maths suggests that the £300 or so spent on two new rear tyres, brake pads and brake fluid could be excluded as consumables , leaving the damage at £700. Main expense has been £400 on front lower suspension joints and tie rods (yet to be fitted).
Despite knackered front lower suspension, the (original!) clutch which is well past its sell by date, one out of the two radiator fans non-functional, amongst other things, it hasn't complained when used for a month as the daily for my 70 mile round commute. I like it.
Will need around another £1.5 - 2k to get get it to 100% mechanically - not all of it is strictly needed, but I'm looking at this as a long-term relationship as opposed to a one night stand.

My CLS, on 17" wheels and standard steel suspension, rides better than my wife's S211"Sport" estate on 18" wheels. Still overly firm, but not current Audi hard. I can see why, when it looks the way it does, the Sports 2 setting should be crazy firm.

The 500 posted on the last volume's dying pages looks good, but that car will have SBC brakes so the normal early 211 caveats apply. One further issue is the headlights - the washers suggest it has Xenon lights: the reflectors corrode and, in my car's case, are now barely better than my 124. I've spent £2k in the last 10 months on my car (DIY suspension refresh and Indy replacement of turbo and other engine issues) but another £900 bill looming if I want to see at night.
Now, where's the cheap lease deals....

I like that. A 211 estate and a old Rolls Royce are good signs of our kind of chap. gforceg said:

Whilst not strictly a barge I don't suppose, I too rather like them. I've never driven one but I imagine it's a fun little thing. porsche-boxster-986-96-04-24v-S2528642-1 by ash_ashy_mo, on Flickr

Apologies - I thought just as much, but noticed the chap with the SLK 32 AMG towards the end of the previous volume and thought I'd try my luck hanging with the cool kids. Will come back when I have something more worthy. Have flirted with the idea of a C215 CL500, but need gin and brave pills in abundance. And then, I'd probably want to hold out for a 600 bi-turbo or 55k, which wouldn't make the cut as far as budget goes. Either of the three seem great VFM, air suspension issues notwithstanding...
