What's the conclusion on the 9-3/9-5 then? Presumably 9-5 OK (but not a great driver), 9-3 iffy as it's too much of a Vectra?

On the subject of practical barges, although I have a passionate hatred for all things Audi, this is a great colour combo (if awful photos). Shame they don't do anything so distinctive these days!

Anything with green leather gets on my automotive guest list.

Isn't that lovely. Touring, M52, manual, heated seats. Huge fan of the interior too.

Pretty close to my ideal spec E39.

It looks good there, but I think the small pictures on C&C do it a great deal of credit. Even in the relatively-small ones on the dealer site I can see lots of scratches and blemishes in the paintwork.

Still, perfect spec for a relaxed cruiser I'd say.

How do they find such lovely examples and sell them so reasonably priced?!

Look at this beauty! OK, soa diesel, but it's so shiny!

It may very well be very rotten though, being it is Scottish and all...

Diesel, but C6s are a thread favourite: http://www.classicandsportscar.com/classifieds/cla...

I have a soft spot for a C6, but that one wouldn't be my choice - black on black, half-cloth and Lignage spec rather than Exclusive.

Needs a reasonable haggle into budget, but this would be my achilles heel: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

I saw one on the M1 a month-or-so ago, it looked tremendous among a sea of dull, leased German metal.

I don't mind what colour they are outside, nor what engine they have, but my C6 would have to be mag interior and top spec.

My D2 S6 had green leather.

Don't where they got the cows from, but after 100k the seats were like new and still very comfortable.

A friend of mine has an A3 of the same age with the optional leather seats and they are exceptional - 200k miles and they still clean up like new and feel absolutely top-quality. Much nicer than the "leather" on newer models. The rest of the car is pretty much scrap now, but the seats are still perfect. biggrin

Interestingly some of the Lignage cars were very highly optioned, so they're not necessarily half-leather etc. One feature they're missing which I couldn't be without (though totally pointless) is the electric rear seats in the "Lounge Pack".

A 9-5 is a great car as long as you're not expecting it hurtle round b roads

I am a regular browser of this thread and have wanted a Jag since I was about six years old. I have finally decided I am in a position to go for it and am looking at an X350 Jag XJ. I have looked at a couple and loved them, but they had cream interiors and I want one with black leather. I am also looking for a diesel, as I do about 18,000 miles a year.

Is there anything specific to look for? I have found a potential car which is local, a little over thread budget, but I would value thoughts and opinions:

Thanks in advance.

That engine needs cam belts doing at 105k or 7 yr intervals, whichever comes sooner, so check it's been done.
Also, at 11yrs old a gearbox flush would be a good idea.

The body is aluminium so won't rust as such.

Don't know much about Jags, but I can do man maths. Compare your one with this...

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

18000 miles a year would need about 180 gallons more fuel in the petrol car, so about £1000 per year. But the car above is £3000 cheaper, so similar outlay over 3 years. OK it's a little older and slightly higher mileage, but after 3 years you won't care as both cars will be nearly worthless, especially the diesel as they will be outlawed by then.

BUT you will have the joy of owning a V8 for 3 years, before being morally forced into something non-combustive

For the fuller Jaguar experience go for the V8! Excellent man maths there. Add the increased expected repair costs of the diesel and you will be ahead (going too far?)

Man maths: EXTREME EDITION

Why would you drive a car that will depreciate?

Why would you drive a Jag that only gives you half the Jaaaaaaag experience, when you could go full-fat!

V12, 1980s goodness. A good haggle would probably bring you down to sub £5k!

V12 XJS - £5,790

Loving the extreme man maths 😀

Thanks for the comments, I will check the cambelt has been done or ask for it to be done.

Were the Merc and E39 similarly cheap and ruined by the time you got them? Sounds like you had a very bad one, hardly fit to tar them all with the same brush.
Merc's been in my family since 2003, it's a 2001 E240 Avantgarde.
I bought the 5 series in 2007, all seemed well until it went bang the next year. I scrapped it..... yesterday. Yes, it had been rotting for 9 years because I am a lazy fk

The car listed was a 9-5 which is a very different prospect to the 9-3.

My 9-5 was built far better than my current bmw 325 which has headlining falling off the front window pillars and rear roof and has chronic rust.
I had a 330i E46 and it never suffered from anything ... well until just before I sold it when it decided to not accept my key anymore for some reason. No rust at all, I had it for 6 years... it's currently SORN somewhere
