I might be getting carried away here, but maybe a <>£5k hybrid would work. Maybe I could encourage one to be all electric for my normal 28 mile working day and only use fosil fuel when necessary.

This is idle hankering atm rather than a statement of intent, hence I'm not going to be so precious about the thread budget, this thing depreciates fairly rapidly so will be in budget not long after teatime anyway.

When I looked at the figures, I got rather interested. Then I read in the advert that the 'hybrid' is not working.

I am compelled to break my self-imposed silence on this thread by way of cartharsis.

Tomorrow I am (was) driving from London to the west coast of Ireland. Until circa 5 minutes ago I was very much looking forward to my first extended trip in my 190e, so much so that I had used the trip to give money to my mechanic as though he was dancing on a pole; bits and pieces - mechanical and non-mechanical - that I had put off.

Parking the car this evening I heard the whining death throes of my fuel pump.

I won't go into the precise language I used, but suffice to say I surprised myself with how angry I could become with an inanimate object. Not 2 weeks ago I seriously considered and dismissed leasing something (C1?). I thought against it because of how fond I am/was of the car. Now, less than 24 hours before I leave, I am left car-less and seething. If it weren't raining here there is a very good chance the car would be alight. I'd appreciate anyone who would share similarly frustrating stories so I may at least enjoy the schadenfreude.

Don't be too despondent .
You may think it's raining where you are but believe me when I tell you that it is really RAINING here and has been for two weeks so you'd see little more than a grey mist when looking for the beauty of the west coast of Ireland .
My tip is don't come in a convertible but do bring a big hat .......
Good luck with the 190.

Yep, straight 6. If you go crazy it does drop pretty quickly, but an 80mph cruise over 200 miles sees an average of 40ish. Tank range is > 600 miles which is really nice too.
I don't think I've ever done 200 miles at 80mph - perhaps explains the mileage!

I like it until I saw the cloth interior and plastic wood dash. All changeable of course and with a few hundred off the asking it could be a nice wagon.

I was already on my way until I saw the row-your-own gearshift. Those wheels alone are worth 1/5th the asking.

Looking at the MOT, it'll probably need four new brake discs pretty soon.

On a topic unrelated to anything that has been discussed in this thread, i have an obsession with checking MOT history's, imagine my surprise tonight when checking a cars history and discovering that the location of the garage that carried out the test is now included, and that's for all vehicles, well the eight that i checked, probably very boring to most but it gave me some enjoyment.

I am sorry about this. They seem to do this: test the faith. My exhaust blew a hole the evening before I was due to set off for Geneva. It is probably too late now, but you could always pick up a fuel pump from Euro and have your friendly specialist fit it. Or even fit it yourself, it's not a lot of work.

At this end of E39 ownership I can't help thinking a Manuel gearbox offers a lot less bork potential.

MOT history indicates it needs brakes and tyres but still seems like a good car.

Other than wear issues I prefer the cloth in any case.

Are you sure they're death throes and not just whining (I suppose you can't be sure though!). My ex CdeG SEC had a whining fuel pump during his ownership, and has whined since I bought it, sounding like someone has an electric drill running beneath car, but never failed to proceed. I only have two new pumps, from ECP, sitting on its roof now as the petrol pipework around the pumps has decided to join the endless trend of differing fluids escaping from the car, and may as well tackle the entire package while I'm at it.

Caveat: I have no experience of 'the market' website, nor what this is worth (probably over thread limit), but I'll post it anyway smile

I do hope the V12 badge is original fitment?

It's funny, when they were new, I couldn't stand that shape 7-Series. They looked bloated, and had a silly boot (as per the 6).

Now I think they look very handsome - and I love the simple flat panel interior.

Any thread experience/knowledge of the C215, in 500 form. c2000, so reasonably early (ish) example.
Unfortunately, my 996 911 might have to go (house purchase) to free up some cash and a dealer has a CL500 in.

Always loved the rear 3/4 view, and pillar-less doors.

All subject to more full-beard correction, but I believe:

Engine + box nothing to worry on as long as they've been serviced.
Suspension may be tricky (ABC), make sure it goes up+down etc as appropriate, but it's a bit of a lottery.
Watch out for corrosion on the rear 3/4 panel, I believe it's a mix of Alu and Steel? I found a site with the full bodyshell breakdown ages ago, but I can't find it now.

Otherwise I think it's the usual electrickery precaution as ever when buying a 15+ year old car. I really fancy one some day, handsome cars.

Found it! http://bayhas.com/mercedes/cl215/contents/body_gen...

Engine and box is tough, its the ABC suspension that generates the heartache and expense, not averse to rust and electrical issues, it is nearly 18 years old. I wouldnt say dont but buy a good one as cheap as you can get it, be as hands on as you can and be ready to bail on it, the later C216 model is available from 10 grand now and that doesnt have ABC, just airmatic which has potential for agro but is generally simpler and cheaper to keep in good order.
