I rather take 997.2 GT3 and 997 GT2 for that money.

I have to say that the R is the most attractive 991 for all the reasons stated, but I can't have one, so I'm not getting upset about it. I expect someone will sell me one for whatever inflated price they can get away with, but doubt I would be willing to afford it.

I come back to my previous point, which is what do you use it for anyway? All these exotic road cars are too fast for the road and too slow on the track. When I bought my one and only 911 (993 C4) back in 1997, I paid @ £72k for it. Today, I have a 13-year-old S8 Audi, a 64-plate Ford Transit double cab van, a nice aluminium covered trailer and a 1982 Historic Sports 2000 Royale sports racing car. Total budget for all that @ £49k. The van is a go-anywhere, do-anything day to day vehicle which will carry me, 5 friends and a shed-load of kit. The Audi is smooth, fast and comfortable, and my wife loves it. The Royale is probably quicker round most UK race tracks than the 991R (Donington @1:16sec)and makes an excellent track day vehicle, as well as race car. I personally prefer this mix to one compromised road car. It is, at the end of the day, different strokes for different folks!;)

Not really. Its all relative.

A 1.0 Fiesta is 'too fast for the road' simply because it can exceed the speed limit. Easily.

Its more about the sense of occasion and the overall package I guess.

Which is why you need something with 600Hp/Ton with short gearing. Speed is far more accessible.

I think that the "R" is an indication what we can expect in the comming years from Porsche, Ferrari etc. The current batch of super/sports cars has pretty much reached the end of the road. Most of these cars are too fast and too efficent for today's world. I think manufacturers are sensing this and will go back to cars that provide and enjoyment rather than beating statistics. So the "R" was a test and we will probably see more manual "drivers cars" in the future as the market will split into "transportation" and "the joy of motoring". Transportation will go all electric and for the people who still like to drive there will be some "low tech" offerings for the week end. Even Ferrari is rumoured to work on a manual car again would you believe. I can't understand the hype about the "R" but if it is a sign of things to come - bring it on.

I tend to agree with the latter. If the R was a "test", then I'd argue the only thing being tested was how much they could wring out of the buying public. Call me cynical, but there's a reason Porsche are as profitable as they are.

As far as the cheap fun cars, Porsche make a big margin on each unit they sell. If they were to continue making money at the same overall headline number but doing it through cheaper cars, then mathematically, the only way to do this is chasing volume. And I don't know that Porsche are a volume-chasing kind of company in the first place. That would suggest they change their approach 180 degrees, which, while not impossible, I find unlikely.

Forget these Porsche 911 R s and GT4's as they are only for the chosen few based upon corrupt collusion between dealers and customers aimed at feeding their overhyped brand.
Real car sites like Pistonheads should not feed the ego of these unscrupulous people. Instead stick to the cars we can all buy if we can afford it with no other restrictions.
Following this diabolical behaviour I hope Porsche loose many customers like me who as result has parted company with this brand by selling my 911/50 and moving on........

I got a GT4 - never had a Porsche before or any previous dealings with the OPC.
