Fuel Additives vs Premium Diesel

In my experience I notice the engine noise being less diesel like with premium. Apart from that - it feels perjurer but I put that down to me wanting to justify the extra cost.

Having had to have an injector replace on a Volvo XC70 and suffered a power loss on a Volvo 30 requiring the exhaust system taken out and given a blow-through I have been using premium diesel since. The problem is that I don't do a high mileage My C30 is almost 13 years old and has only done 80,500 miles.
My son suggests I save the money on premium diesel and use Miller's Eco Max instead. The concentration is only 0.1% so the cost would be much cheaper than premium diesel.

I tried V-power Shell diesel on its own, and also standard Shell diesel with an additive. I then tried BP Ultimate. BP Ultimate seems to be the better fuel, and reduced the (already faint) diesel ignition noise on my BMW 335d. The noise is faintly noticeable when on cruise, and the injectors come in to maintain speed. However, I cannot be totally sure that there was not any residual standard Shell with additive in the tank. The BP Ultimate is/was significantly more expensive, and I cannot find any Ultimate on my regular routes either. The declared cetane values all conform to the regulations, but I believe we have seen on here that BP Ultimate does have a higher cetane value.
Given that:
I can’t get BP Ultimate locally, not at a sensible price anyway, and
BMW filler cap says ‘no additives’;
I have just continued using Shell B7 Fuel Save, as it is on my route, and is the cheapest around me including supermarket stuff.
Next time I am on a trip and see BP Ultimate, I may try another tankful.
