RE: Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500: PH Heroes
Discussion
Good grief. I knew Roop is a Cosworth fan but I had no idea he had an ex Brock car. I'm in awe.
I watched these cars trackside, race in the ATCC at Barbagallo raceway back in the day (always from the Checchele Esses). I remember when subsequent to TWR's protests, DJ put his cars on display at a shopping centre for anyone to come and inspect. I doubt anyone worked harder in ATCC history than poor DJ. Somehow always had the odds stacked against him, whilst everything landed in Brock's lap, by comparison.
Great feature. Thanks PH and thanks Roop and everyone else for bringing them out for the masses to enjoy.

Worked at a Ford dealership not long after they stopped making the RS500s. The boss had been told unofficially by ford that none of them went out the door with 224hp. It was always much more - we got told between 250 and 300.
Fantastic piece of kit in race car trim, but as said before ,the inside wasn't really a nice place to be in the road cars.
Funnily enough, I remember quite a lot of the motorsprt press being quite snooty about it as it relied on turbocharging, when 'proper' race cars were supposed to be NA.

Sticking to standard road cars, comparing a 3 door to something like an E36 M3 or a 250 bhp 944 turbo and the Cosworth doesn't drive that well.
Cant agree with that , my cosworth was far more stable at speed than my e36 m3. The m3 was very light on the front at speed.308mate said:

Delighted you enjoyed it pal. It was a great day at Donington, albeit a bit cold. Thanks must go to Ian, Richard and Chris for this article. Really good to chat to Richard as a genuine enthusiast for these old girls.Butter Face said:

Hi Richard
What a great artical , you have done myself and the other owners proud .
Owning one of these iconic rs500 race cars is quite special to me and i have saved for 20 years to be able to have not one but 2 of these cars in my collection .
With this year being the 30th its great to see them getting some great attention again.
See you at the Autosprt show next week

I can supply the registrations if required. It's the one we took in and sold in 2008.
Great cars and great owner drivers too ;-) So pleased so many of these cars are still around and roll on 2017 when we all get them out on the road to celebrate I hope?
Mine was the last of the pre-production cars out of Tickfords and has some interesting stickers and history as the 'parts validation vehicle'. Mind you like an old broom, many parts are new shall we say ;-)

Had a lot of good times in Cossies back in the 90’s…
A customer of mine (Pharmacist in Nottingham) had a black 500 he used as his daily… when car crime was at its peak.
A friend had a moonstone 3dr, with c.400bhp, coilovers, big brakes, BBS wheels… it really looked absolutely stunning and it was properly quick – massive flames out of the exhaust on down changes
And another friend had a couple of 2WD 2 door Saphires. Both over 300bhp. 1st car I saw over 150mph in. He could get them to pull some very silly angles.
Still think the Saph is good looking car today

I could be wrong but am pretty sure the Sapphire was the saloon and definitely had 4 doors ?A customer of mine (Pharmacist in Nottingham) had a black 500 he used as his daily… when car crime was at its peak.

From my mid-teens to late twenties, to say I was a Cosworth fanatic is an understatement. Cosworths to me were like plastic surgery to Michael Jackson. When I eventually got a 2WD 1989 F-reg Sapphire in white, I was in heaven. It was an amazing car back then and everyone loved it. The numbers are nothing compared to today's crazy-mad German whips, but relatively speaking it was just as awesome in its own way. It's doubtful that there will ever be a car that will punch above its weight pound-for-pound like the Sierra and Escort Cosworth family of cars. Epic in every sense of the word.
