P6 185 / 60 13 I think on my 1982 XR2 was mind blowing at the time

Used to run those on my Celica, never knew they were meant to be a circuit tyre, that would explain why they never lasted more than 8500 miles...

Worked reasonably well in the wet I thought.
They weren't meant to be a circuit tyre.

Goodyear G800 Super Steel. Good enough for Sir Robert Mark, good enough for me. And "A major contribution to road safety"
These were Grand Prix S not G800 Super Steel. The Super Steel was advertised by Jackie Stewart by landing a small aircraft on them.

An early form of winter tyre - the Town and Country.

My dad used to have these on his Rallycross and Autocrss Mini Cooper S and would use them on the road in winter great for the snow and ice;

That is a Dunlop SP44 not a Town & Country which was Firestone's crossply winter tyre

The first tyre I can remember noticing as anything other than blackish and roundish was a late attempt to boost the fading market for cross-plies, the Dunlop Groundhog. I was about six at the time and remember my dad explaining that no, we weren't changing from Michelin radials to crossplies, but not really making me understand why. The advertising was absolutely brilliant, more so than the product I imagine. Tthere were posters, TV spots, stickers, toys based on the Groundhog creature, the lot. Here's one the of TV ads.

The first tyre I regarded as a proper 'hero tyre' in a more informed way was the CN36, which was the thing of choice on all the vagualy accessible cars I aspired to as a teenager. Lovely tread pattern.

Firestone SAT's would get my vote.

Superb off road but plenty of brown trouser moments on wet tarmac.

A539s are where it's at.

I could wear fronts out in 3k miles on an Alfa 33 16v.

Ultimate imo! Had these on my 106 GTI!
These are still available I put a set on my Escort last year. Great tyres, and less than £200 for a full set of 185/60/13!

Slightly off topic, but can anyone remember or find any online info about the wet weather tyre that was being developed by I think Continental in around 91 or 92?

It was unusual because it had a very large pronounced central groove, maybe 15-20% of the tyres width from memory, with a lightly treaded "tyre" on each side.

The manufacturers logo name was printed in the central groove and as I say I have a feeling it may have been Continental.

I don't think it ever made production, but it was certainly a well developed concept when Autocar magazine had a feature on it.

I had these in 6.50x16 on my 88" Series III. As above, hilarious on a wet roundabout.
