You don't have to ASSUME that you've seen everyone if you've done your obs properly, because you'll KNOW you've seen everyone.

What you are saying, in effect is, "I think my lane change is safe, but if it isn't, maybe my flashing light will help some poor guy I haven't spotted take evasive action and save both our lives."

I think that's more than a bit shoddy. The argument that no matter how much attention you pay you still might not see someone is admitting you're an incompetent liability, and you use your indicator as a wishful safety net.

Proper obs negate 'automatic' indication.

Sixty-six GRAND for a 530D?! You can get a brand new RS7 via Broadspeed for £68k. Granted, there'll be offers on the 5-series, but there are very rarely any discounts when a car is still new.
Big discounts already available on this car.

Exactly, not sure why some find it so hard to grasp.

SpeckledJim, did you watch the vid I linked up in my earlier post?
Indicators are there to tell people what you're up to. If there's no people, you can't tell them. Can you?

The 'just in case' indicator means you've no idea whether you're about to cause a pile-up, because you haven't checked properly.

It would be nice if we could, like gentlemen, move on from this indicator nonsense and return to talking about the actual car.

I agree that 66k for a 530D is insane and of another planet, notwithstanding hefty discounts being available from the off. These inflated list prices are only there to make the lease prices seem reasonable.

That's only because it's loaded with £15k of options. The standard car now has LED lights, leather, auto box and Navigation, so a base spec car with no options is actually a very good car.

On motorway do you change lanes because
a) you're Lewis Hamilton and need to keep your tyres warm at speeds below 70 mph
b) you overtake other cars so that means there are other people around you, which means you should be trying to tell them what you're up to even if YOU feel that this information is not needed from YOUR POINT OF VIEW.

This reminds me of a story I heard once where a lady when asked why she never indicates said "well I know where I'm going". That's exactly your logic.

There are plenty of these in dealers marked up at sub 50k already, a competent and comfortable way to travel no doubt

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. It's not admitting that I'm incompetent, it's admitting that I'm a flawed human who might make a mistake, because that's what humans do. With that in mind, I choose not to deprive others of information about my intentions, because it costs me absolutely nothing.

This has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not my 'obs' is 'proper'.

I find your attitude staggeringly arrogant.

Launched in diesel only?

When governments are legislating against diesels because of nitrous oxides?

When increasing numbers of major cities are banning diesels from their centres due to said pollutants?

When other marques are reducing budgets for diesels and increasing for petrol accordingly?

Get with the times BMW. Launch should be petrol only.
But current BMW diesel range Euro 6 accredited so not impacted by toxicity charge? It's pre Euro 4 diesels where the real issue is and these are going to get hammered, along with older petrols.
Thread revival. Was looking for actual first hand info in the comments, alas. But can add some. The 520d recently scored by far the best in a real world emissions tests. NOX levels (at 28 mg/km) were almost three times LOWER than the euro 6 permitted levels (80), and six times lower for real world testing that allows a factor 2,1 higher than the laboratory levels. This while most other makes were several (five, ten) times WORSE than the permitted levels. So the 520d and the 530d which uses the same tech (EGR + NOX trap + SCR/adblue combined) are the cleanest diesels out there and actually outperform many an euro6 gasoline car! So BMW is right to be confident and keep selling diesels. They are not only keeping with times, they are ahead of them and one reason I'm here looking for actual PH driver experience...
