It's bigger, availability of seven seats, low range box, 3.5 tonne towing etc.
Not to mention it won't have the upright driving position with big visibility which is so characteristic of Range rovers. This alone will make the 2 models appeal to different buyers .

OT, but saw two new Discos yesterday morning. Standard Land Rover looks front and side - but that back...! Euwwww!

If you thought it looked bad in the photos, wait until you get behind one. The obligatory mahoosive number plate didn't help either.

Looking forward to washing this experience away with a sighting of the Velar in the coming months.

Fair enough, I couldnt really tell how big/small th Velar is.

Beginning to find the LR/RR line up all a bit confusing these days.

Saw a Velar on the M5 yesterday in white on tradeplates. I must say it didn't stand out like I thought it would, certainly didn't have the presence of the RRS. I only noticed it because of the different DRL's.

I guess that while a company can promote a stable of 'matching design ethos' that in reality, the reason why manufacturers make their smaller cars resemble their larger ones is because there is data that shows it makes more people buy them and at a higher price. I suspect that with the old Freelander it attracted mainly prudent people who weren't easily talked into buying lots of options, whereas now the model resembles a more expensive product from their range they have seen a marked uplift in not just sales but their value.

I'm guessing that's why Audi slapped that over sized grill from their larger cars onto their smaller ones and why Porsche made the original Boxster look near identical to the then 911. With the smaller models you need to sell higher numbers and making them look more like the big ticket items helps that process.

I think if you took one of each of LR's products from about 10 years ago it was actually quite hard to see any visual link between any of them (apart from the basic fridge shape). The Defender, Freelander, Disco, Sport and RR all looked totally different and I think they were very much the last big manufacturer to have such a line up so it actually seems a bigger shock than it really is now they have streamlined the models into two basic visual forms, the more practical Land Rover versus the glamorous Range Rover Range and each one has its selection of sizes where the design allows the buyers of the most basic model to feel attached to the prestige of the most expensive one.

Every premium manufacturer has done this and LR are probably a decade behind them so it just seems more of a surprise to us than it really is.

Just wait for the Defender replacement as I would be pretty sure that it will follow the design cues of the current models rather than the original Land Rover which is probably why they are waiting before launching its replacement as they will need more time to pass to do so.

I meant to upload this before - forgot, sorry.

Although the car does look reasonably large at first glance, get up close and it's not massive at all. Open it up, mind, and it's actually small inside.

The row 1 seats are almost all the way back. The head rests are behind the B pillar. Sit in one, it is not small.

About the same size as an F-pace. We're all fairly used to seeing them, right?

I hope so as well. They would do well to look closely at how Wrangler did it.
