In my case, my instructors car was a Renault 5, followed by a Fiesta Mk3 1.8 diesel (not too many lessons, he switched cars mid teaching, honest guv).

Reward from driving school for passing was a motorway lesson in a 3 door Sierra Cosworth. The owner of the driving school was also my woodwork teacher!

51 plate Fiesta mark 5 1.3. Was new at the time. Even as a learner, it felt slow.

My second car, a Vauxhall Nova 1.2. White with a green interior. I even remember the reg, A808TGD. Don't bother searching it, I scrapped it after a hard 18 months in my 17 year old hands. Chassis leg and bulkhead had cracked so stripped it to the shell and sold off the spares.
I had four lessons, two in the instructors car and two in my Nova on the day of my test two weeks after my 17th birthday. I did have the test booked on my 17th but had to cancel as I had college, so took the next available day.

My instructors Kia Pride circa 1998, a truly hateful car.

I seem to recall it was purple.

Instructors Corsa 1.3cdti. Must admit a great car to learn in, easy to pull away from junctions but without any top end to get you into bother.

Possibly the only scenario where a small diesel is the most appropriate engine (and small vans).

A '96 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 (learnt with BSM). Easy to drive I guess but pretty gutless. I did most of my practice in my mum's '95 Fiat Cinquecento Sporting, which felt like a 205 GTi in comparison! smile
