Perodua Nippa. Horrible car, couldn't move the seat far enough back so my legs would get stuck under the steering wheel.

Came pretty close to maxing it on an overtake once, top speed was 84mph.

I actually got marked down for failing to make sufficient progress on the test, as the mighty 850cc triple with 37 horse power, just wouldn't get going.
850cc? 37bhp? Luxury. The A30 I took my test in had 803cc and 28bhp!
I took my test in 2001, pretty sure it was the slowest new car you could buy at the time.

Chrysler Alpine, in 1977. My dad's car, he'd had it about 4 months. A month later I wrote it off.

I learnt in a mk 1 escort, the instructor was a family friend and we often used to stop at our local pub for a pint with my older brothers part way through the lesson.

For some reason he couldn't make the test with his car,so I borrowed a Marina pick up and a mate sat beside me to go to the test centre.

Strange thing as I was about to start the test the examiner announced that when reversing around the corner during the test I could look over my shoulder if I wanted as the Marina pick up was commercial.

Learnt in dads Austin 1800 MKII and then the Fiat 124 twin cam which replaced it, passed in a '76 Fiesta Pop (instructors car).

In 1990 I used my parents 1989 Ford Orion 1.6 Ghia I - Radiant Red no less.

Knowing that I was using a fairly sporty car for my test, my instructor predicted what route the examiner would likely use for the test and was spot on. So I had plenty of practice on the roads of the route I eventually took, making it far more comfortable for me.

I learnt using Bedford CA and CF, Volvo Amazon or Ford Anglia but passed test in Instructor's Austin 1100. Quite easy in a town with two sets of traffic lights using a relatively small car.

I had most of my lessons in an orange Talbot Sunbeam. A couple of those were on an ice covered car park learning to go sideways. Great instructor was an ex rally driver, guy called Rex Jepson (great name too!). Failed my test though and I still maintain it wasn't my fault that a bus coming in the opposite direction made me mount the kerb to avoid the accident....
Passed a few weeks later in a Lada Riva. 1982.

Ford Escort, on April Fool's Day. There was a particularly tricky hill-start at a right turn by a pedestrian crossing. My instructor had said that if the examiner takes you there, you've probably already passed.

1990 Toyota Corolla 3dr. I drove it when it was one day old and for the next couple of weeks until test. God it was a marvellous thing. At the time it felt so smooth and quiet. The clutch/gear change was just silky and super light steering. Ok it wasn't the last word in dynamics but for a learner it was blooming perfect

2008 Toyota Yaris 1.4 diesel. Nothing special in the grand scheme of things, but I appreciated its simplicity and it got me through the test!

Checking its MOT history, it soldiered on to over 250,000 miles and is currently untaxed and MOT expired.

At the time a 3 month old 1996 Citroen ZX turbo Diesel . Was a lovely car for an enthusiastic 17year old. loved listening to the noise of the turbo on the dual carriageways, handling was a delight . although I was over the moon at passing my test I was relegated to a 1985 Nova . I will always have an appreciation for the Citroen ZX as the car I leant to drive in .
