Good Morning All.

Asking some advice here.

I've been storing a car for smoe friends who went to Australia for a couple of years. A 2011 Audi A1. It's been sat on my driveway for just inside 2 yrs, I've ran it occasionally and driven it up down the drive to eep it moving.

They're coming back in a few weeks and have asked me to MOT / Service it for them - I've booked it in with my local garage, however I need to get it there.

I don't think i can legally drive it there, despite it being booked in as it has no Tax nor insurance.

Garage can collect it, but charge a lot of money to bring breakdown truck 5 miles up the raod for it, I understand why they need to charge, but friends are on a budget so trying to avoid it.

Can I legally tow it behind my car?

Any other options you can think of to get it there?

Cheers.

Tim

If you book it in for it's MOT and ask them to service it first you can drive it there.

No other garages near where I am - rural Scotland. I have a good relationship with these guys so will be sticking to them. Yeah they can send a man out and he'll drive it over on trade plates, but theres a charge for this.

I CAN't drive it there, even if it's booked in as no insurance.

My question is - can I tow it behind my road legal car?

You will need all road wheels off the road, other wise it needs insurance.

Bluntly it is going to be cheaper getting trade plates....

Insurance >pre booked MOT > Tax, in that order.

Some sort day insurance would be an option? Add it to your mates storage bill?

Got to be easier than finding a trailer?

  • edit - Can they not insure it with you as named driver online now? They're coming back anyway?

No one will insure it as it's SORN. Easy to get temp cover if taxed, butt impossible if ssorn, and cant tax it until it has MOT. Chicken and Egg situation!

No storage bill to add it to - they're mates. Didn't cost me anything anything to look after it for them, trying to keep costs down.

Neighbour is a traffic cop - i'll have a chat with him tonight!

Garbage. Which company told you that?

Two of my vehicles are currently SORN and insured.

If your mate is coming back surely he will insure it anyways, so get added as a named driver.

If it was me, I'd pay the extra fee for the garage to collect it on their trade policy.

Pretty sure the insurance companies don't check if it's taxed or SORNd.

You can insure anything .. even a pile of scrap metal .. what you can't do it tax it without insurance and an MOT.

So insure it for a day ... ask your insurance company. Don't tell them why, just say it's a friend's car and you are using it for a day as yours is not available.

I've done it with loaners in the past from one of my garages I have used.

Pretty much the following options to do it legally:

- Take out insurance yourself for a minimum period, you'll need a day to get it there and a day to get it back.

- Get your friend to insure it (he'll need insurance anyway) and then drive it yourself if you have 3rd party cover on your own policy

- Pay the garage to come and get it.

- Borrow an ifor-williams and trailer it, but it has to be fully on the trailer.

- No issues with an untaxed car driving to and from an MOT.

I'd do (2).

Insurance and MOT are prerequisites for tax but not the other way round.

Whoever told you that you can't get insurance for SORNed vehicles is obviously unaware of my bike which spends the winter in the garage, on SORN and fully insured. When I bought the old Jag next to it, that was also on SORN but I insured it, drove it to a pre-booked MOT without tax but with insurance, then taxed it once it had the MOT. I passed an ANPR camera en route to the MOT so got a letter from DVLA but I sent copies of MOT, insurance and tax which clearly showed the sequence of events, and they were happy with it. I don't ever remember any broker or website asking if a vehicle is taxed or SORNed before giving insurance quotes.

That's actually a very good point. Several times in the past, I have insured loan/courtesy cars through my own insurer from just a day to a week or two. From memory, it wasn't much more than £20-30. It would probably be a lot more expensive if you searched for a brand new day policy.

A current MoT is needed to tax a vehicle, but insurance hasn't been checked when taxing a vehicle since 16/12/13 and won't be checked when this car (having passed its MoT) is taxed. Taxing it can wait until the car's owners are back home though, as can insurance.

Just getting the car to and from its MoT with insurance in force seems to be the issue here smile .

How much are the garage charging to collect it from 5 miles away?

How much are your friends paying to fly home from Australia and ship all their stuff home?

I suspect the cost of B is why A is unpalatable... Rather more to the point, I wonder how much this 2011 A1 has lost in depreciation whilst it's been sat there untouched for the last couple of years...? Why on earth didn't they just flog it?

<shrugs> But anyway, as all the others have said, whoever told you you can't insure a SORNed car is talking big fat hairy sweaty bks. I'm looking at one out of the window, right now.

Insure it. Book an MOT. Drive it there. Drive it home with pass in hand. Tax it.
