I've got a one (got it exactly a year today) and I absolutely love it. Genuinely can't fault it at all. 150HP SE Business with DSG, heated seats and heated windscreen - it's awesome. Got it on a two year lease and I'm really not looking forward to it going back.

Took it to Le Mans last year (sorry if you were camped next to it, it didn't fit in the pitch!) and it was sooooooooo comfortable. Swallowed all our camping gear, beer and food. The 750 mile run home was a breeze.

I'd happily buy another - and maybe will! smile

Went for a "petrol blue" 280 with a cream interior, which I picked up in January. First brand new car I've ever bought. It's quite different from my Elise. :-)

Skoda Superb 280

Also went for the L&K, which basically has all the toys except a sunroof, a reversing camera and ventilated seats. All of which I added because I was saving so much over a BMW I thought why not? :-)
Things I like:
  • The understated lack of shouty anything.
  • Space, obviously. I'm 6'3" and other >six footers are very comfy indeed back there.
  • The ride (despite what a bunch of magazines say, I think the Dynamic Chassis Control is good to have if you're a vaguely keen driver - it's seriously wafty in 'comfort' setting, but is a lot more tied down on lumpy B roads in 'sport' - I never really run it in 'normal').
  • Full length sun roof (especially combined with the cream interior and the sense of space, it's such a nice light and airy place to be).
  • Seats (full electric two-way lumbar adjustability is great).
  • Adaptive beam assist xenon headlights. It's kinda freaky driving with full beam on and having it shutter off a dark patch around oncoming / leading traffic. Works surprisingly well.
  • The ventilated seats, even in winter (I think they're going to be ace in summer).
  • It's basically much, much quicker than everyone expects it to be, which brings its own kind of small joy to the world. Accelerating out of a roundabout on a dual carriageway the other week, a Subaru Imprezza WRX STi that was doing similar made a lot of noise, but failed to even vaguely stay with me. His friend in the passenger seat was practically wetting himself with laughter when they caught up. Childish? Yes. Makes me smile wryly around the edges? Yes. Why else would you buy one of these:-)
Things I don't:
  • The 280PS comes with a shorter-ratio gearbox compared to the 220PS. It's a bit less relaxed in top on the motorway as a result and the fuel economy suffers markedly because of it. Maybe there's a good reason for it other than acceleration figures, but I feel it could use a longer sixth - it's spinning at around 2,300rpm or so at 70mph, which feels rather unnecessary given the amount of torque and power on tap. I imagine they'll fit the seven speed DSG to it at some point, which would probably help with that.
  • The rear parking sensors cut in way too early - camera is a must given the length of the thing, but that lets you get within an inch fairly easily
  • Brakes can be slightly grabby with the DSG and auto stop/start system when coming to a halt, and the stop/start can kick in before you come to a complete stop, occasionally just before you roll back onto the accelerator in traffic. It's not *that* annoying, but it doesn't quite feel calibrated right.
Things I'm ambivalent towards:
  • Adaptive lane assist. It doesn't get in the way, but it's also far from a Tesla autopilot type system. It's a bit meh.
  • Virtual pedal. It can be useful if you have your hands very full of heavy things, but on the other hand, standing on one leg and waving the other around when your hands are full of heavy things tends you make you bang them into the tailgate or make you fall over entertainingly. Feels like a gimmick.
  • Auto-parking. It won't really fit itself into spaces that are short enough to make it worth having - seems to need at least 1.5m longer than the car, maybe more. Get the camera instead; it's much more useful.
  • L&K badges on the wings. They look tacky and I've taken them off.
  • Launch control (yes, really). Whatever.
  • LED DRLs. A bit shouty angry Audi for me.
I'm intending to run it into the ground. I paid £35k cash (but bear in mind the sunroof is about a grand, rear camera is £350, ventilated seats £450). For the amazing amount of kit, lack of image, pace, performance and space, I really don't see how you can beat them. An equivalently-specced/paced Audi 6 or BMW 5 estate is massively more expensive and not as capacious (and the Audi arguably has a worse ride), and the smaller offerings are more expensive and, well, smaller. They're also much more expensive to service, etc. (although possibly lower depreciation, but not really if you spec them up). It's a much better-packaged car than the Mondeo and the inside is just a nicer place to be, IMO. If you don't care about the badge or the first 18 months of depreciation, I can't really see the downside.

That looks great, thank for sharing! We're finding the same with the stop-start and the parking sensors so it's always nice to know we're not just being weird...

Wow, I did not think the DSG would be that bad at all, in fact I was looking forward to test driving a car with the gearbox! Is it the same for 120/150hp diesel engines?
The 150 is supposedly a nicer drive then the 190 with a different power delivery.

My brother has a 150 2.0 tdi Superb with DSG.

Very smooth with gearchanges not noticeable at all.

Even coming from a V8 Lexus performance is very good.

He drove both 150 and 190 and he reckoned the 150 suits the car better.

His only real issues are

1) Not sure if this is Irish market issue specifically but colour choice was limited .

2) DPF - it's reliable and does its job - but car won't change to 6th during a regen, uses more fuel during regen and if you switch off during a regen the fans go on overtime (he parks it in his garage).

The DPF thing isn't a big deal though - hes a bit miffed that Skoda don't tell you about these things when you take delivery of the new car. The extra fuel isnt a massive issue as the car happily does 58 to 62 mpg PROPERLY calculated.

His work colleague has the 190 and was only getting early 40s.

I don't like very much from the VW group, but these seem brilliant.

As a basic brand fast estate I'd rather read about the Insignia VXR (more power, V6 and manual gearbox are all more interesting to me). However I know that's being replaced soon and I'll follow the updates on this car - I'll be interested when they're getting cheap used.

There are a few cheap 3.6 six-cylinder Superbs about in the used market which look like conspicious value for those who don't mind paying VED.

The wife got a black Skoda Superb estate 150 diesel DSG a few months ago and I have been seriously impressed. The interior quality, fit, finish and kit on her SE-L is brilliant. Her company car allowance meant she could add a lot of toys to the already generous spec list.

Power wise the 150ps diesel engine suits the car well but I had already priced up an L&K etstate with the 280 engine prior to PH getting one on their fleet. The car is car better than an Octavia for quality of materials and I felt a 280 engine in one would really be stealthy and surprise people.

I would not rule out getting one even though I 1) Don't need the space and 2) Have a facelift A45 AMG which though far quicker is not going to be as relaxed.

Overall I can't speak highly enough of these cars - I have been rather taken in the short time we have had one!

Some good fun at VMAX200 yesterday for my Superb.
Hitting 177mph while keeping up with an R8 v10.

Is that 280 remapped / tinkered with?! 177mph is crazy (even if that's 165mph actual).

It's 177 actual and that's within a limited track straight. I should be able to see 185 on a longer run, limited by the gearbox ratios.
As I said, good fun smile

Picked up a 6 month old 16 plate 280ps L&K for 27k and am delighted with it. I think it must be the ba**ard offspring of my STi Impreza and 520d estate!

I do fancy chucking a Powerchip on it or similar in a year or so and would appreciate any experiences on this or similar engines?

Oh and on the subject of spec choice, what Dilbert goes for the wavy-footy-boot-thingy rather than say, rear camera?!?!?!

Isnt that where you qave your foot under the back bumper to open the boot in case you are carrying things?

I went for a test drive of the Jaguar F-Pace and they demonstrated that foot-wavy-boot-openy thing, saying that it was handy if you've got arms full of shopping.

Normally if I'm buying that much I have a trolley, but some people might find it useful

Tried 4 different tuning boxes. Best by far are the JB4 and JB1, in this order.

Read all about them (including dyno graphs and acceleration time) in my thread:

I've had a look at the other forum thread and that's a nice Q car.
Can you give a ballpark figure on how much that build cost? I know it depends on how much the garage is charging and how cheaply you can get the parts, but if you could throw a realistic number(s) that one could use for budget planning I'd be grateful.

It really depends a lot. A friend is just doing his and found a slightly used turbo and downpipe and also doing a little work himself so in total it will cost him around £5,000 including mapping. Someone else I know is going all the way with even bigger turbo, engine and much more and is paying close to £20,000

So looks like for what you've done 5-10k is a decent estimate.
Thanks for the answer smile
