True. But I like my cars purer and more involving than a new Golf. Reality is that I don't see someone who only has an R as being a the sort of car guy I would relate to.
What cars available new are pure enough for you?

Then out of that how many are practical enough for everyday use to somebody with a family?
Very few is the answer. However, some new cars certainly do appeal, for instance:

-Any Lotus, particularly the current Exige
-Alfa Quadrofoglio, Merc C63
-Current Megane 275 Cup
-Any Porsche GT car
-Volvo V90

I like focused cars and for me the Golf covers too many bases. But that is its appeal for some but for me, it lacks singular focus as a result.

Of course, if I had a gun to my head to buy a new car for £300 a month which had to do everything and I could only own one vehicle then it would get a look in.

Given most of us are not in that position, I would question whether the owner of an R and nothing else is a true car guy.

I am not against new cars at all, I have a Cayman GT4 after all. But my family car for carrying the wife and kid is an old oversteery BMW coupe.
Sorry but the bolded bit is just too much for me. Questioning whether people are "true car guys" based solely on what they drive is beyond ridiculous. You have absolutely no idea what choices they've made or what their motivations were.

This is the problem with all of these threads.
Let me rephrase then - they are unlikely to be the sort of car person I would have much in common with. We all have priorities and other expenditures in life but I genuinely cannot see any reason why I would ever be in the position where all I could have was a new Golf R as an only car. There are much better and more interesting solutions, irrespective of one's situation and finances if they are what I woukd deem a 'petrolhead'.

If someone wants one then fine but as I said, personally they are unlikely to be the sort of car guy I would have much in common with. I don't chat to randoms with Golf Rs like I would with plenty of other cars. Same goes for Audis and the like.

Don't really see the issue with such an opinion.

Good answer IMO. I can see the appeal in those cars (although having not driven one the V90 is a bit of a surprise!). If I could justify more than one car, I wouldn't have anywhere to put it and I don't think the mrs would want me deciding what she gets to drive!

I was just thinking there are a lot of cars (3 series as an example) that are allegedly getting slightly worse to drive every generation although getting better in almost every other respect.

In an ideal world I would probably have more than one car but to be honest I am quite happy with my S5 for now even if it does take away some of the driving experience when pushing on compared to the Golf, it makes up for it in droves elsewhere. I would have probably considered a C43 if they weren't silly money on the lease (around 50% dearer than the S5)

Go on then, I'll bite. Particularly as your list of cars above includes nothing comparable with the Golf.
Imagine this scenario.

You run an 8 yr old Saab 9-3 which is just about big enough for the family of yourself, wife and two kids. However you notice that the room in the back isn't amazing for the size of the car and the boot could do with being a bit bigger.
You start a new job which comes with a company car (choose from a list of cars you'd rather slit your wrists than own) or you can opt out. If you opt out your car must be less than 4 yrs old, have four doors and a boot.

Better, more interesting options please.

Wel, there you go then chaps. If you own a Golf R as your only car then you are not allowed to post on PistonHeads. SidewaysSi has spoken. wink

But, more seriously, being a petrolhead is a state of mind and being - it has nothing to do with what you drive. There are kids who are not old enough to drive who can legitimately be classed as total petrolheads.

Look, if you don't own a Cayman or a clapped out old BMW then you aren't a car guy and sidewayssi doesn't want to talk to you, OK?

Makes me question why your bothering to interacting on a thread relating to the Golf R if you've no interest in them or the folks that drive them?

Some people are obviously a little sensitive about opinions. Of course a kid can be an obsessive petrolhead, that goes without saying. But I doubt they will only have a new Golf R when they get older and have such means.

My point centred around those whose only car is a new R.

As for PH, there are plenty of obsessive car people on here. But similarly those who only have a passing interest.

I like interesting cars, irrespective of age and type. The Golf isn't one. Hardly that controversial a statement is it?

So, my only car is a new Golf R

So I can't be an "obsessive" car person? I'm confused, I thought (and my wife would vouch for this) I was a bit obsessive about cars.
Still, shall I hand my PH cards in on the way out as my opinion clearly counts for nought on any topic.

As someone else said, you spend an awful lot of time on a Golf R thread for someone who finds it so uninteresting

I wouldn't go that far but if you could refrain from having an opinion on anything that falls into the categories below it would be appreciated by those who choose to look down on you;

Anything rear wheel drive
Anything with two seats
Anything italian
Anything from a low volume manufacturer
Anything that has "character"

Many thanks for your cooperation.

I'm only joking Hackney! I can't stand emojis otherwise there would have been a smartie conveying a deep sense of irony on the previous post. Carry on sir!

Just stay off the Exige Cup thread ok!

Joining in the fun/daft statements can i just say that I can't regard anybody who doesn't ride a motorcycle as a 'true' petrolhead. Also arent all GT4s owned by investors instead of enthusiasts.

These sweeping generalisations are fun aren't they.

I know what you mean. I get to spend a good deal of time with someone who has spent millions on cars over the years dating right back to the seventies. Bizarrely even though he's had plenty of exotic stuff and has a deposit down on the GT2/RS when it emerges he's never had an Alfa which we all know is the true barometer of a petrolhead??

Don't worry I've made it perfectly clear to him he's not welcome in these parts!

Back on track though I'd just like to say that even though I personally have never desired a Golf my brother has only just got rid of a GTD and a colleague has an R and I always think they are very decent places to be in. Same as Audi's, I've never really wanted one but completely understand why so many people do as they are just a very, very tidy all round ownership prospects. The fact you can get fantastic deals on the R make it even more so and why would anyone be offended by that?

Love the sensitive nature of a few on here so yes I do apologise. The Golf R is an amazing car. I love it. I love the owners and everything they stand for.

If you actually read above, I did say that the R may actually make a decent family/shopping car for me. I do think it is probably too capable but do think it may be something worth considering.

However I was merely questioning why a die hard driving and car enthusiast would spend £30k on a brand new vehicle that is 7/10 across the board as their sole car. IMO is does not make sense.

It doesn't have to make to make sense to you though does it? It just needs to make sense to the folks who wish to buy it and I can think of many reasons why folks would not least because as you've stated it's a 7/10 car in so many different area's which is ideal for those who are limited to having one car to cover all bases.

If you haven't realised that the thread has lost interest in your opinion by now I guess you never will.

In your opinion of course. I found mine quite 'interesting'.
