There exists a diesel with a 'cult' following ? Really ? Blimey you learn something every day !
I think he simply misheard what was being said.

Or perhaps just a different take on things or angle as to how you interpret things going on around you. You don't always need to follow the herd you know. Which is what makes the world interesting.
So just like your last thread about UK cities banning diesel cars, this thread is also just your opinion presented as fact laugh

Excellent time to own a 3.0 petrol then
Excellent time to own a 3.0+ diesel then, as dealers will be giving them away. biggrin

I don't mind the tax, as I already pay over £300 for mine.

'Cult' is probably a bit too far but I've got one of the 5 cyl Merc 270CDi's and they're well regarded. When I suggested I might get rid of it on one of the Merc forums a bunch of people contacted me.

However that interest doesn't add anything to its value - they still want it for buttons!

Spoke to a well regarded sales manager the other day and he's already instructed his team to mark down diesel trade ins by further 15% minimum on rock bottom book value. Petrol enquiries are on the up apparently.

Is this the tip of the iceberg?

Anyone else heard similar?
Nah. Frankly - hes full of st.

I've access to a big online dealer groups trade site and diesels are easily making bottom book for retail stock.

He wont do any business if hes proposing knocking 15% off trade book - buyers know exactly what their cars are worth and will simply go elsewhere.

I own a diesel. TBH people leaving diesel in droves is a good thing. These are the same people who shouldn't be in them and think in terms of 'how much will the monthly cost be'?

Less diesel on the road = win as long as the cars they are buying are alot cleaner.

Diesel cars like mine have a cult following so won't be affected a jot.
So its okay for you to have a diesel but everyone else should get rid of theirs? This does seem to be the opinion of many drivers out there, that emissions are everyone else's problem.

I have a diesel too. Its brilliant for what I need in a car, i.e. driving 60-70 miles to work, but I generally park it up and do all my local trips to town by foot hopefully minimising my impact on local environment.

I really don't think the move to petrol is the answer either. What do people think comes out of the tailpipe, pure 100% clean air?

Another q; Whatever happened to bio diesel? Was all the rage about 15 years ago, but seems to have died a death.
There have been people buying diesel cars for quite some time who really shouldnt be - small mileage PA, lots of round town work, etc, etc, but all they could see was the higher MPG and the cheap road tax.

If those people move to petrols or hybrids then thats a good thing all round.

For new cars, it is quite likely / inevitable that petrols will take a much larger market share (People will follow government policy as they did in going to Diesel in the first place).

When the nearly new market sees a stark reduction in availability of diesel, we might even see them holding value better.

I work for BCA. The balance in cars going out for demos is stark. Loads more petrols, far fewer diesels.
I didn't think BCA did demos?
They own several companies that do. I even picked up a petrol powered van in London the other day. For me that was a clear sign. A petrol powered van. Not driven one in 20 years.

Um, literally any proper 4x4? Land Rovers 200/300/td5 diesels have a massive following, Toyota B,H and V8s, Mitsubishi 4d56's, Old merc OM units, all have a pretty large following and tuning community, as do VAG PD units because of there potential for easy tuning more than anything else.

I doubt the market is going to change much for 4x4s, vans, and commercial vehicles much as there really isn't much of a viable alternative out there turbodiesels tend to be the optimal engine for this application. My only hope is that those of us who use our diesels for there intended purpose (towing, high mileage, farm work etc etc) aren't going to be caught up in the retroactive legislative mess in place to discourage diesel 'city cars'.

I said diesel cars like mine not diesel cars. Berlingo's sell quick you don't see reams and reams for sale. I'd rather have one of these than a A4 TDI S line.

I assume he's claiming his Citroen Berlingo has a cult following. I'm not aware of a general population enthusiasm for them so i guess it's likely any fanbase would be a small cult, could be legit. Perhaps they have secret handshakes.

Stranger things have happened i guess. Hell, now we know Jay Kay has a Fiat Doblo as a runabout of choice anything is possible.

ha I already knew they are more harmful like 10years ago... but I believe this is just a stupid FAD in UK...
Either way have never had a diesel nor will ever have, petrol cars just cost less to maintain & purchase, has lower mileages in 2nd hand market so it's no brainer.

You do realise that for a large portion of the population cars are just transport?
Plus the only thing they really care about is how much it costs to run. A year ago I was doing 2000 miles a month in a petrol car that did 30MPG. If you only drive short distances this isn't so much of a problem, but 10 days in after already putting £130 of petrol in the car and needing to fill up again the novelty had already worn thin.

I would take a diesel every time in that situation. If you are driving up and down the motorway all day who cares if the car is diesel or petrol?

Its a no brainer for your particular circumstances. Many diesel drivers do so because of the economy you still get compared to petrol variants. Granted you could go down the hybrid route, but with a diesel golf averaging maybe 65mpg brim to brim and you're doing 20K+ pa the savings mount up.
