Sticking to speed limit - local council have won.

Living in North Yorks I'm blessed with fantastic scenery and open roads, I also believe it's one of the only counties in [i]England[/] with no fixed cameras.
However, it does have a very active mobile speed camera crew which although easily enough to anticipate, can still catch you out if not paying attention.
Recently it's been announced that an extra 12 smaller mobile units are now in operation, in essence they are handheld devices so can easily be concealed in more hard to reach locations?
The result?
I'm now driving like I'm on my test, no more driving to conditions but a rigid adherence to speed limits, it's simply not worth the additional points for only a few more MPH extra.
I'm glad I get my enjoyment these days from leg powered, two wheeled transport.

A bit of a pain, but look on the bright side - cycling will be safer. I visit friends in York quite often and it's surprising North Yorkshire has escaped speed cameras for so long considering the number in south and west yorks.
I guess the answer is to find roads which can be fun at or below the legal limit, I.e. Twisties...

Agreed, how is that guy delivering the speed awareness course going to feed his kids with you sticking to the limit , if they get rickets it'll be your fault If everybody done the same the council tax will have to increase by more to make up for the loss in revenue otherwise services would need to be cut.

I wish the government would just say all fines back to them and this will fall over as once there is no income to share councils etc. will pull the plug.
We were over Masham way over the easter weekend driving down the A684 from Sedbergh, passed a couple of mobile speed units along the road...
One was the traditional camera stuck out the back of a Police Transit van but the other was a small tripod mounted device deployed by a police motorcycle rider sat on his bike... The bike mounted setup was small enough that it could hide just about anywhere and unless you were looking for it - very easy to miss.
It's enough to ruin your day....

I should be clear that I'm not advocating speeding, most of my driving is entirely sensible, being more than happy to follow the car in front.
It's actually a very effective policy and should act as a major deterrent, I just hope I don't fall victim to a 'careless' 44 in a 40 or similar.

I have to admit that I am getting really annoyed by North Yorkshire's approach to speed cameras over the last few years.
They are concentrated on the A64 near York where they take in £££££ from many people doing 75-85mph. This is not a dangerous dual carriageway, but apparently there is no longer a need for them to justify camera locations based on accident rates any more!?!?!?
Then there are no cameras whatsoever in the villages and near the schools where numerous careless drivers are often doing 35-40mph without realising it.
I know the limit is the limit, but to me it is clear that their efforts are solely revenue generating and not for the prevention of accidents or any such like.
I also read that after a recent FOI request NYP were unable to provide stats on how effective the cameras are at reducing speed. (Un)amazingly they only measure the number of offenders and not the effectiveness of their campaign... shocking really and just typical of the short-sighted public sector mentality.

I'm not a speeder (usually) but I think just past the speed limit change from 60 to 30 is a fairly unfair place to be.

It might be an unfair place to be, but it's totally logical for a system that doesn't care about safety, only revenue generation. There's a location near us where the NSL goes to 30 on a sharp bend and well before the village it's protecting actually starts. Can't come do anything about toe rags firing fireworks down the street.... all the time in the world catch someone going a bit faster down a DC.

Outside built up areas, we're getting lower and lower speed limits that have no merit, gifted to us by Gwyneth Dunwoody and her merry band of halfwits.
It's fair game to treat bad laws with contempt. So I do...

The camera one was the most sobering - police officer (not a camera operator) on a bridge over the road, but stood off to the side in dark clothing with his back to trees and the evening sun behind him. He was invisible until I was a couple of hundred yards away, and they can do you at 1km.
