£550 for a first service at 12,00 miles on a mundane Mazda5 Diesel. If it were exotica or premium then I could understand but the stupid diesel needed the valve cover taken off to check/set the clearances and the associated new gasket etc. Compare that to the £112 for the Zafira it replaced.
They said that at 12k miles they need to take the valve cover off the engine and do what now??

I used to pay £120 for an oil change on my mondeo 10 years ago.
Thats mad. I used to get my mondeo oil changed at National Tyres for about £30. I do the same withnmy fiesta. If It needs plugs and filters I pick those up on the way home and fit them on my drive (in about 30 minutes).

My dad insists on taking my his car to the main dealer even when it's over 10years old.

He paid £9xx.00 for a service on a old MK3 astra. It was worth £5-600, it had an issue a few months later so my mum made him sell it. He got £300 for it.

Every time he mentions something to do with money I bring up his old astra.

Ok not so much dealer rip off but lack of common sense on my old man's behalf, he's doing the same with his current focus.

local ford dealer quoted me £350 for a first service on a diesel Mondeo,

parts are pennies on trade iirc a full filter kit comes in around £30 air oil fuel and pollen (ford don't change the fuel or pollen at first service) and granted oil on the mk5 is a bit pricier but not enough to justify the cost.

had mine in for some a fuel pump replacement under warranty and got it back with 8 litres of oil in it frown hence I love my indy
'Kin hell.

And I thought I was getting ripped of by Ford who charged me £224 for a 1st service on my Mustang.

You can bet that the monkey doing the work on your car is not that well paid, so the majority of the cost appears between the service bay
Yup, less than 10% of the pre-VAT labour charge is what the top paid technician will generally earn at a main dealer for their basic rate. Most of the lads in the back will be on minimum wage or a touch above. Servicing a modern car isn't tricky or taxing, just fiddly and awkward with modern packaging constraints. Diagnosing the things when they go wrong is with a lack of training and equipment my most common complaint.

I take both of mine to the main dealer (1996 and 2008 cars), but I've known the service/parts guys and the senior mechanics there for a long time, they look after me / don't try it on, they charge very sensible prices, and in return they get regular business and the odd recommendation from me.

So it's not always bad-news stories.

That said, local VW dealership have gone downhill recently - always pretty good when wife had her Mk5, but when she switched to a Mk7 2 years ago the prices seemed to increase significantly...for the year-1 minor service! scratchchin

€43 For Oil/Filter (I do it every 6k Miles)
€42 For a Diesel Filter. (Every 3rd/4th Service)
Can't remember what the Cabin Filter Cost, €12 or so?

That's all Main Dealer parts.

K&N Life Long Air Filter was €50.

Timing Belt already done before I got it. (Every 150k)

Who says a Diesel is expensive? smile

BMW motorcycle dealers are very good at extracting the michael as well. I was reading threads elsewhere on here they can go up to £100p/h. They make car servicing look good value!

Umm, £100/hr is going to be a chunk cheaper than a BMW car dealer...
