Hello.

I hope someone can suggest an answer to a logistics problem.

My step daughter had the EGR valve replaced on her 2011 VW Touran last year when she was living in Yorkshire. It seems it has now failed again, just within 12 months, and the garage will happily look at it FOC.

The problem is she has now moved to Cornwall.

She can get the car (which is in limp mode) recovered to Yorkshire but how can she get it back down again? Single mum, two small children, she can't just jump on a train up there.

Anyone know any companies who could for a reasonable price bring it back from near Northallerton to Newquay?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just pay a local garage to sort it than incur the costs involved in getting the original garage to look at it FOC? After all, they might "look at it" FOC, but that doesn't mean they'll fix it FOC, so it could end up costing anyway.

Don't the kids fancy a couple of days holiday? York or the Dales, AirBnB? Maybe a one-way car rental to get there if the train'd be prohibitively expensive?

It's 400 miles. What would be a reasonable cost per mile for transporting it? £1? 75p? 50p...?

How much would the garage be willing to put towards the cost of getting it sorted locally?

The original bill was £600. The Yorkshire garage has said they will fix it, whatever is needed, FOC.

They have suggested a garage in Bristol who would do the same but she would need to pay out up to £600 again (which she doesn't have) and then (try to) claim it back.

Taking two children aged 4 and 2 on a road journey like this just wouldn't work....

Thanks for the suggestions though.

Cheaper to buy a couple of headrest DVD players to keep the kids amused and drive it back than it will be to get it transported.

Won't recovery to Yorkshire cost a fortune? Or are we assuming that a breakdown policy will cover it?

My car is currently in Cornwall too, an it's a pain to get back to Liverpool on public transport (5 hours on the train, then 1 hour bus), so I'm guessing Yorkshire will be worse.

If the limp mode is not too severe (e.g. my M5 wouldn't go above 1500rpm) then can it not be driven down, and organise a one-way car hire for the trip back home (mine cost about £100 from Enterprise, which was cheaper/easier than either the train or plane). Have you asked the garage whether they can provide a courtesy car, or whether they'd like her to wait whilst they do the fix?

I can't believe you even consider taking it back to Yorkshire from Cornwall...!!!

£600 to replace the EGR valve? The indy that looks after my OH's BMW 120d have quoted £90 for hers replacing.

Flybe do flights between Leeds and Newquay. I was just looking at LBA-NQY flights as it happens - £150 return for two people on the dates I was interested in. I'd pay about that much in petrol for the same trip!

Would her step-father do that job? Up/down by train, drive the car back.

I would do that for my step-daughter (if I had one).

They've said it's FOC because they know there's not a cat in hell's chance of her moving it 400 miles back up there.

Also it's probably failed because she only drives it to the shops/school and back and is chock full of crud again which comes as a direct result of that kind of driving and using the cheapest diesel available.

Realistically the travel costs and potential child care costs to get it back to Yorkshire, fix it and get it back down are going to amount to an absolute minimum of £200 and a full day wasted and that's assuming everything goes to plan with your taxis/trains/planes. A man with a car trailer isn't going to move it for less than £1.50 per mile unless he's fly-by-night so based on 400 miles that's £600 to get it back to you.

Get it fixed locally. If you do some research you'll probably find an owner's forum with a How-To guide for clearing out the EGR. You can remove them to clean them on a lot of models, the Touran might be one of them. If not then she's no other option but to find some money and pay someone to sort it out.

I'm inclined to agree with NoIP.

Appears to be a common issue with VW group diesels.

Sites mention software updates but that they are only available from franchised dealers.

Be a idea for her to talk to some of the local independent garages - or an indy VW specialist - & see what the cost would be.

You don't give details of the model & engine so no idea as to the accessibility of the valve, but a quick ebay suggests the egr valve is going to be under £100 & youtube has a number of 'how to's'.

AA/RAC, limp mode constitutes a breakdown surely and she wants it taking to the garage that repaired it.

RAC t&c definition of 'breakdown':
“breakdown”/“break down”/“broken down” means an event during the policy period that stops thevehicle from being driven because of a mechanical or electrical failure, including as a result of battery failure, running out of fuel, broken keys to your vehicle, or flat tyres but not as a result of mis-fuel (unless covered under Section I), road traffic collision,fire, flood, theft, acts of vandalism, or any driver induced fault"

AA t&cs:
‘Breakdown’ means an event:

Vehicle is in 'limp mode' so can still be driven albeit with reduced performance.
