Well...is there really a market for a new expensive diesel these days? Would people really buy this type of vehicle with their own money?
The used market for diesels is about to nose dive in the near future, best let company car drivers take this one.......if they can!
Interesting, as Auto Trader have said that used diesel sales have risen in the first quarter of this year.The used market for diesels is about to nose dive in the near future, best let company car drivers take this one.......if they can!
I think the tabloids are scaremongering with all this diesel talk, nothing unusual there.

will be st to drive just like every other diesel
Yeah, 70 grand cutting edge cars often are, really, jesus ?It will be epic at what it does, it will be faster in the real world than any of us need, or even want, any speed and a slight whiff of throttle will have you pinned to the seat, would love to see what you drive that would render something like this "st to drive" ?
Dust off the M67TÜD44...
M67TÜD44
4423cc (87 × 93) 90° V8
242 kW / 330 PS ---> 300 kW / 408 PS
750 N•m / 553 lb•ft ---> 900 N•m / 664 lb•ft
190 kg (dry)
It would be less stressed than the B57 lump at similar kW output levels and would play a little music through the exhaust under WOT.

Absolutely love it as the owner of a 640D, it really is hugely impressive.
Drawing reference to an earlier post as to why buy the diesel? These are all barges and the extra torque getting the thing moving is a massive help and can really make for an easier drive (at least based on my experience in the 640D).
Would you really want to take a 2000 kg car out for a fun drive like a lighter car? Unlikely, but when I have taken my 640D despite being a diesel it is still a giggle in sport plus mode. I do not do that often, but when I have had an opportunity for a drive and needed the 640D it still is sensible enough for my parents in the back and my OH in the passenger seat.
And despite being a diesel it still sounds better than the numerous even duller 4 pots that sit at a set of lights....
As for diesel being at the closing dawn, it will be interesting to see as there is no "real" viable alternative for larger vehicles, hybrids IMO are still excessively compromised.

I agree the tabloids are just scaremongering...for now!I think the tabloids are scaremongering with all this diesel talk, nothing unusual there.
The government has to reduce pollution, it has no choice really.
The fact is they will not say anything regarding how they are going to tackle vehicle pollution..... until after the election!
You'd really hope they've tested the extra grunt on the rear air springs with a fully loaded car!
Not like the current F11 which fail their air springs after 40k miles, leaving you stranded on holiday!
Love seeing these mega diesels though. I prefer petrol generally, but diesels make sense in a large family car like this for holiday trips and the like. We love our 530d.

It is strange if the only reason to buy this is because it has better range than an equivalent petrol engine. Why not just have a bigger tank? If it is a cost thing, then buy the 520d just like everyone else whose done the numbers.
maybe also because BMW don't make big power petrol Tourings anymore? All the V8s are dead, so no 540i or 550i - the 540i is now a 3.0 turbo six, and that lazy power and sound of the V8 petrols is gone...sniff sniff.... ndj said:

I bet at some point in the future, when 1 turbo needs replacing in the future, the dealer will "recommend changing all 4 to be safe", at some silly cost which approaches the value of the car.
That was the first thing that crossed my mind! I had the 'joy' of a DIY turbo change on my 530d given the horrendous dealership price for the work, and there was only one of them.

I will never understand why people who can afford to buy these big engines would bother trying to save money on gas...
It's not about saving gas more than it is about saving time with less need for stopping for refuelling - some people would rather do it as little as possible (I put myself amongst them).J4CKO said:

just personal preference, for example I'd prefer to drive a golf gti pp or something with less power that was petrol. yet to drive a diesel which didn't just feel awful

Well, I don't know about G31 as they aren't fully released yet - but certainly with the F11, they didn't offer the 550i in the Touring - only the Saloon / GT.
