RE: Shed Of The Week: Volvo S80
Discussion
Yep, these old Volvo's are great and don't be put off by high miles, look for SERVICE HISTORY and you will be fine. I had a V70 (54 plate) one owner 2.4petrol - full Volvo service, lovely car 190k miles, no trouble. Buy with confidence. Oh yes, I still have an XC70 D5 SE Lux (2008) on the fleet, so much for so little.
I have a long history of Volvo ownership, I am fickle and drift off to other makes but always return to them .Started with 240 -245 then 740 ,360,850 ,s70,s40 and recently C70 ×2 .In a ghastly Renault Diesel at present but will probably be back in an S60/70/80 next .
The only cars I feel confident in jumping into and doing long distances in at the drop of a hat .

Since January I am another very happy owner of an S80! An 06-plate of this shape, last of the line with all of the extras, all still working. Sat Nav, heated electric seats, cruise, its got absolutely everything including a rear window blind
I have an 80 mile round trip each day and its perfect on the motorways, a surprising amount of power available from the 2.4 D5 with Auto gearbox like this Shed
The size does give it presence, I have noticed people tend to move out of the way more compared to my old Citroen C3. It feels solid and safe and I'm rather proud of mine because of the mileage
258,000 with 22 service stamps and you would never know -what people say about Volvo's coping with high miles is true 6k since January already covered

it has a certain gravitas and is one of those cars where nobody can work out why, could be someone wealthy who has had it from new, could be a shedder, could turn up anywhere in it and it not really look out of place.

Couldn't have put it better myself, its classless class if that makes sense

One of our regular traders recently brought one of these in - theirs was a petrol 5cyl with the manual (probably a better combo than diesel/auto at this stage in their lives)
They'd basically stolen it from someone on GumTree for £180 - same year as this but well under 100K, the car was basically, immaculate.
We repaired it's only fault (shorted heater resistor - fan blowing constantly even with the keys out) and it trotted-off to a new owner.
This one looks pricey by that standard but hey!

Would like to try a D5 actually. Got my V70 for £900 with 44k on the clock and a few issues but I love it! 2.4 petrol 170, not the fastest thing but it's utterly charming and seems to fit in anywhere.
Stuck a cambelt on a couple of tyres and done 6k in it, might treat it to a sevice soon

Bought a £1k S40 in October that's done 14000 faultless comfortable miles since with a healthy 51.4 diesel mpg average.
Think I'll always have a reliable old Volvo of some description.

You do realise it has a Renault dci 1.9 engine - open the bonnet French stuff everywhere - this model is not really a Volvo.
And the s40 was a Jv with Mitsubishi so I suppose the seats are Swedish.
Lovely cars. I had three in silver as cars for our wedding 10 years ago.
My old man was a big Volvo fan but would never buy a black one joking that he'd only need it for a one way journey.
For his funeral our very obliging undertaker sourced an S80 hearse and Limo for that one way trip. They were T6 models too.
He changed Volvo's often and had planned to get an S80.
They look fantastic value now. There a two near where I live. One like the car above on a Y plate. It's had the same owner since new. The other is a very odd white example that looks low spec. I can't recall police using them but it has that ex-plod look.
People really must love them as also in my area there is a 51-plate US-spec V70 which was imported by its owner many, many years ago.

I bought a used S80 but with a petrol engine back in 2006.
It was one of those car supermarkets where you could only have a very short test drive, and I needed a stop gap car, and it seemed ok.
However, once I took it home, I didn't find it smooth riding for a barge, and the turning circle was horrible, and the roadholding was abysmal. I was so disappointed, I got rid of it after a week. I then ended up buying a Lexus GS300 which was a few years older to the S80, but far smoother to drive.
