12k is a massive hit imo I aim for £3k a year hit max on normal cars and have been working my way upto some nice metal over time.
Good luck buying anything mainstream new then!

Don't get me wrong, it's more than I'd want to suffer which is why I don't buy new cars (the most I've ever lost in a year is about £500) but for people that buy new cars, the initial depreciation of the Elise is not particularly high; it's just not particularly low either.

How many special edition Elises have there been in the last 21 years ? Time for a new model.

It took until page 2 - standards are slipping on PH.

This isn't a special edition, it's basically an options package.

Saying "time for a new model" is not, in itself, helpful. What do you want them to change and how much more are you willing to pay for the changes?

Not sure I believe those stats but guess it gives a guide.

Ignoring the finance deals, it's easy to get between 9-10% off list price.

I still say a 1/3 off the value is very high, and the same as all other news cars, a mugs game imo.

Perhaps, but that's nothing to do with this car, that's just the nature of the new vs second-hand market in the UK.

I'm currently in the market for a mint low mileage S2 Exige S but cant seem to find a suitable one.

I have decided to go for an S3 Elise S or 220 Sport if I can't find an Exige.

Lotus Sliverstone has new a non facelifted 220 Sport but wont go any lower than £41k on it. Knowing that what the initial depreciation is on these cars is I'm not willing to pay over £35k for one so I guess I'll be going for a 2 year old version to save some cash.

It all depends on how you are buying. If you are buying with cash then go with the cheaper one obviously but if you need to finance it you often can't find finance deals on any used car that is better than a finance deal on a new car, and I'm not talking about PCP deals. HP only as that is what Lotus advertises at 4.9% for 48 months. But you have to do the math on both and see if over the loan term which one is the cheaper option in any case.

A 220 cup at a good price?

Wow, I hadn't seen that one. You have me salivating now. Its still a bit out of my price range but you never know.

Fair enough. Since you said you were looking for a S2 Exige S240 or S260 then I just assumed your budget was somewhere around £35,000 since you won't really find a nice S240 or S260 S2 Exige for less than that. I personally wouldn't bother with the 190hp or 220hp Exige versions.

You could pay cash for the bulk of it and finance the last remaining £10,000-15,000 with a super cheap personal loan at 2.8%-3.5%. No dealership will be able to beat that.

I had my eye on the Black S2 Exige S that Will B had recently (£29k) but it got snapped up too quick.
I've just emailed AT to go see that Cup this weekend. If it's the right car then I will find a way.

Cheers for the heads up on that car. I can't believe I missed it.

Glad I could help. I had noticed it when looking for an Elise as I'm hunting for the right S2 Elise SC Touring. That 220 Cup is basically a brand new car and is a lot closer in spec to the new 250 cup than people realise. The biggest difference that I can see in terms of lap times is down to the tyres. The 220 cup has Yoko AD07 which is now replaced by the AD08R, but the 250 cup runs the Yoko A048 which is almost a slick like the Toyo R888, Pirelli Trofeo R or Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2. I bet the Cup 220 is very close in lap times to the Cup 250 with the same tyre.

Any real Pistonhead has to try/own an Elise. It's what peeps used to say about owning and Alfa but this will be much more satisfying!
I'm on my 3rd Lotus. Once driven never really forgotten. Even if you stray for a while, you end up coming back as there is nothing else to compare.

New Elise development is underway but the current platform will have to soldier for another couple of years yet. This is no bad thing, of course. But new is always good for editorials.

I am fortunate enough to own an early S1. Light steering, light clutch and gear change. An absolute joy to drive, whether going for a gentle run with "The Boss" on board, or adopting, within reason, the Colin McRae "if in doubt flat out" mantra at track days.
I also have a 111R (with a Lotus Supercharger). Heavier steering and clutch, but a significant step forward in terms of ride and comfort. Even "The Boss" is relatively happy to be driven longish distances given the air conditioning and improved suspension. 220bhp is a major leap forward, and it would leave the S1 in its dust accelerating at any speed, but particularly above 60mph. Absolutely hilariously brilliant speed machine.
I bought both of these second hand, the S2 has less than 20K miles on the clock, the S1 50K.
Both of them together cost me a LOT less than the Cup discussed earlier on this thread.
God bless all those out there who buy new or take out PCP's, I'm more than happy to keep buying second hand. As for the Z4. Nice car, but as an earlier poster said, once you've driven Lotus, you may stray, but you keep on coming back.

you have a short memory what you stated and why I keep posting.

" the initial depreciation of the Elise is not particularly high"

of which I keep saying yes it is.
