RE: Volkswagen Up GTI - official
Discussion
Strikes me as more of a Up! GT than a GTI - which doesn't mean I don't like it.
If it is £15K that ain't bad, when wasn't a Lupo GTi £12.5K about 15 years ago - which by my maths means to allow for inflation it should be more like £16.5K.
I got too inpatient waiting for the rumoured Up! GT from about 4 years ago, which VW even let EVO Magazine drive a rather production ready looking prototype of, bought a Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo 105TSI instead and have got rid of that because I need something bigger. (I hope its worth the wait!).
I think this would make a great second car - Roll on 2025 when they're £3K.
Instead of a mid engined Club Sport S how about the 1.5 TSI EVO 150PS from the new Golf?

Sub tonne kerbweight? Where has all this BS about lightweight cars come from? One minute on Google shows the current Up weighs up to 1250kg.
Ditto the lightweight 1300kg+ GT86.
Welcome to post fact world.
The E-up might be getting on for 1250kg but the normal 1.0 up! is 929kg.Ditto the lightweight 1300kg+ GT86.

Surely the currently available Toyota Aygo/Peugeot 108/Citreon C1 with 1.2T engine will be a cheaper and lighter alternative?
I think those weigh about 850kg and have about 100hp...but they're still too fuppin' expensive
The 1.2 is N/A and 82PS but weight is quite low at 865kg. They are quite nippy but not enough to be..quick.I think those weigh about 850kg and have about 100hp...but they're still too fuppin' expensive
My girlfriend has an Up exclamation mark of some variation. Move Up exclamation mark I think it is. It is horrendously slow and the gear ratios have been worked out by someone who trained as a welder but once up to speed it is fantastic fun. The chassis is actually pretty good. Very chuckable. I imagine that this will be fantastic. She wants a Polo GTi next but I may suggest a go in one of these. Either way I'd love a go in one. Reminds me a bit of a Panda 100HP but built properly... and the Panda is a fantastic little car.

I'll bite on this (owned a 100HP)....the Pandas of those eras most certainly were built properly! Totally solid little things, built in Poland i think. Totally solid, even more so considering the rock hard nature of the 100!xjay1337 said:

Are those rear drums?
As a Lupo GTI owner, I'm not impressed. The Lupo stood out by all the subtle (different body shell for the rear arches, for example) changes that were made. This is just wheels and suspension...
You clearly aren't a "proper" VW owner. Half of the "builds" are wheels and suspension. As a Lupo GTI owner, I'm not impressed. The Lupo stood out by all the subtle (different body shell for the rear arches, for example) changes that were made. This is just wheels and suspension...
But maybe that's just me...

Not so sure...
What's more instead of a body kits like this Up GTI, Lupo GTI had its own unique aluminum front and rear wings which have four wider wheel arches to accommodate the wider front and rear tracks. At the front, it also has its own headlights design which is different from standard Lupos, that also applys to front bumper and the aluminum bonnet. One other thing most people don't know is that It has a magnesium rear hatch which is borrowed from Lupo 3L model.
Things like this annoy me, that manufacturers don't make enough of an effort on bodywork on the performance models anymore. Nowadays they often try and use plastic bits to make it look "racecar" rather than nice arches etc. Mk4 R32, look at that vs a normal mk4 and then any R vs it's non R equivalent and the difference is all in bumpers and grilles a lot of the time. Like the new RS5, at least they made the front wings wider but then couldn't be bothered to sort the lights so put an afterthought "quattro vent" or whatever it's called to make the distance up. BMW and Merc seem as bad for not making their performance cars look different enough other than slap on bits. What's more instead of a body kits like this Up GTI, Lupo GTI had its own unique aluminum front and rear wings which have four wider wheel arches to accommodate the wider front and rear tracks. Wish we could have some daft cars like the Clio V6 or the M coupe of a few years ago where they were quirky with unique styling.

I suppose that perhaps its like the GT86, go on about what we want and wouldn't it be wonderful if they made this car, then they make it and we treat it like cats who mither to go out, you open the door and they just sit there
Indeed. There's been no end of posts recently about being unable to enjoy big bhp cars on the road, and rightly so! I concede that a bit more power than 115bhp wouldn't have gone amiss, but there's plenty of cars that have provided a grin factor with similar power to weight stats - Ignis Sport, Yaris T-Sport, Panda 100hp, SportKa, Swift Sport, C2 GT, Twingo GT/RS and the Colt CZT/Ralliart (which with a stock 150bhp must be the ultimate q car in this category).Hopefully VW are onto a winner with this new Up (not sure about the GTi badge though) but as we've learned from the GT86, price is going to be key.

No, the original GTi was 8.5 to 60, the Renault 5GT around 7.5, this is going to be 10+ so things have not improved in the intervening 40 years. Seems all you need to make a GTi is something vaguely sporty looking.
Not sure where you're getting the 10+ second to 60mph guess from - they already do a 1.0tsi with 89bhp which does it in 9.9, so this should be a decent chunk quicker than that.M1C said:

Ha, so will I. Just bought an '08 model 100hp and it's very solidly-made. This seems a similar sort of ethos though - similar weight, more power and torque. Can you get a 5 door model of this - just skimmed the article?PS - Not sure a 595 is really a competitor is it? So much less practical. I always thought of the 595 as a Polo GTI rival.

Hmm. The top spec up! is around £12.5k.....so this should be £15k at the very, very most.......so why do i think VW will take the mick and it'll be £16995?
You can get other models with this engine from £11.5k.So...in that case...what do we think.£14,995? Less?! (still a hefty premium isn't it!)
