If it comes in at 15k basic then I can't see why you wouldn't buy the 500 Abarth.

No, the original GTi was 8.5 to 60, the Renault 5GT around 7.5, this is going to be 10+ so things have not improved in the intervening 40 years. Seems all you need to make a GTi is something vaguely sporty looking.
Not sure where you're getting the 10+ second to 60mph guess from - they already do a 1.0tsi with 89bhp which does it in 9.9, so this should be a decent chunk quicker than that.
Indeed, as long as they don't gear it stupidly, it should be good for around 9 seconds at worst I'd have thought.
Roadtest I saw was 9.9 in Evo.

Hmm. The top spec up! is around £12.5k.....so this should be £15k at the very, very most.......so why do i think VW will take the mick and it'll be £16995?
You can get other models with this engine from £11.5k.
Right...the 89bhp version yeah?

So...in that case...what do we think.£14,995? Less?! (still a hefty premium isn't it!)
It's 12 grand for the one with this very engine.

8.6 if those car performance calculators are to be believed.

I am sure that things have improved in the last 40 years, I mentioned the brakes earlier, the MK1 Golf GTI had woeful brakes, plus this will be safer, more economical, better made, emit less nasties, have better in car entertainment.

Also, this is now two rungs below the Golf GTI itself, that is where the progress in performance is (and the R) s, this is a sub Polo sized car, it is just that the performance stats are similar to the MK1 Golf GTI, which I have had two of and were great, Mk2 was much better though.

When you say 'this engine', you mean the 113bhp?

Getting confused again, the 89bhp one.

Do we know if it's likely to be the same engine that's in the Golf Bluemotion? That's a 1.0tsi 3cyl with 115ps and 147lb/ft and manages to get the much bulkier golf to 60 in 9.7 with official figures of 65.7mpg and 996/km so seems like it'd do well in the smaller Up!.

I like the look of this! I've been waited with bated breath since they done some concept ages ago, I liked the stock Up!, it deserves a bit more power. I've got a Panda 100HP and love it, the wheel at each corner of a box look has always attracted me lol. If this is a bit quicker and as much fun in the bends it should be a winner imo.

115bhp should be enough if it's got a bit of torque behind it, plus there's always room for a little remap and exhaust.

Just spotted this interior shot on another site..I think it looks quality, check the flat bottomed wheel!

I'm very surprised it hasn't got the digital dash like the other new VW line up's though. (no pun intended)

Really do like that, looks a lot better than the Twingo GT and the Brabus Smart thing IMO. I've heard from Car Throttle Kia is doing Hot-ish Picanto too! Circa 110 BHP-ish, so it'll be nice to see these type of small segment Warm Hatches making an appearance, will this open to flood gates now ?

That interior does look excellent. Some kind of performance meter function on the top of the dash too, or is that just meant to be a phone holder?

Yeah, it's a phone cradle with an app that hooks into the car to get info, work audio/satnav, change settings etc. Will probably have a GTI-specific version with more doodads like boost gauge.

I was looking at getting an UP exclamation point and it was VW's way of saying you could have "sat nav" - basically you downloaded an app on your phone, and it interfaced with the car.

I think this looks class, and I don't even like the standard Up! really. In fact there's probably only two or three modern VWs I do like.

I recently got a Swift Sport and may have considered one of these if they were about at the time. I agree with the comments that it could do with 10-15 more ponies, 115 is still enough though.

I hope they're common enough that you get to see them about a bit but not so common that you get sick of them a la Fiesta ST (unlikely).

I like it. I'd have one over a 500 Abarth, mainly because I don't really fit in a 500 and my Citigo is no problem. Sort of want a Citigo VRS now version though hehe .

The only thing I'd fix is making the rear spoiler black not body coloured, so that there's no break up in the black from windscreen to back window.

So, colours other than white? Polo and Golf GTi are white, black, silver, grey, red or dark blue. Hope this will offer something brighter like a yellow or metallic orange.

Oh and the rear lights, I don't like the new ones either, I'd rather have them black something like these LED ones

Are those rear drums?

As a Lupo GTI owner, I'm not impressed. The Lupo stood out by all the subtle (different body shell for the rear arches, for example) changes that were made. This is just wheels and suspension...
Got to agree, oh dear it looks more like a marketing exercise, cheapens the brand, sounds like the 2.0 115bhp golf Mk4 - a rather disappointed friend had one, he said it was a good Gold but not a GTi

To me the GTi should be different, and drum brakes and a 115bhp engine just doesn't sound much like a modern Gti.

Where are the discs all round, follow the line of the Lupo with a central exhaust, bit more power.
