Hi

I am looking for a bit of advice, no doubt this may have been discussed before but I received a official VW letter from their HQ a few months ago reminded me that I have to comply to the Roads transport commission and update the software for my VW 2011 Passat and then a few weeks later another final reminder letter saying I need to comply.

I foolishly took my car down to my local VW dealer and first time around they had it for a day and they eventually got back to me to say they cant update the software if there are errors with my car. They said my glow plugs needed replaced despite my car working perfectly. So ok I agreed to pay to get the Glowplugs replaced and then a they took my car a few days later for the software firmware update.

In receiving my car yesterday and in span of driving 15 mins down the road, my dash lit up. Errors sprung with

Hand brake warning, abs warning, anti traction control warning and type pressure warning.

The car still drove ok but my start/stop stopped working and auto lock disabled too. It's a automatic with a DSG gearbox.

I called the dealership back and eventually their rep got back to me and told me it's got nothing to do with the update?? I was speechless it is blatantly a software issue tripping the sensors, but he eventually agreed as a courtesy they will take a look next thursday? There is no way my car suddenly had issues with the handbrake, abs, anti traction and tyres all failing all at the exact same time. To further prove my point If i switch off and then back on its clears itself. But again in driving 15 mins or so it will reoccur. It was working perfectly before the update and never had a issue like this before. They can't blame its a cooindence and probably had it before because that would contridict their earlier statement saying they can't update with errors so cant have it both ways?

What should I do if they start telling me stories and start quoting bills for repairs? Was it a mistake to assume it was in accordance to the law?? My biggest concern is that if the software isnt regulating the car properly will it damage physical parts?

Any advice would greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Kyo

I would check to make sure they have actually replaced the glow plugs, a nice little earner to cover the cost of the recall.

I didn't think it was a legal requirement to have to software updated.

As said, you don't need to get the update done. I have a 2011 Scirocco diesel and signed a disclaimer at the dealership to reject the update. For me, it wasn't worth the risk. I'm happy with the car's performance and economy, so why would I want to take the risk for no real benefit to me or the environment.

I have heard of people having issues with the EGR valve after the update along with more frequent regens of the DPF but your issue does seem a strange one and possibly just a coincidence.

Your issue looks more like a faulty wheel speed sensor or steering angle sensors. Needs scanned to confirm.

Cost is picked up by VAG , not the Dealer, stinks to High Heaven though.

There have been reports than in some cases that the u[date has caused further issues, possibly what happened here?

Yep, best to avoid - no good stories out there.

I had to pay for it myself they didn't pick up ****. What's most annoying is the letters was made out to be a legal requirement when it wasn't. Just knew I should researched it first. What a stupid idiot I am. Will definitely be calling VW head office first thing after the bank holiday to complain.

Was there any indication of a problem with the glow-plugs?

You could try VW customer service but apparently their usual response is to say "we've never heard of that before" even though VW UK management has acknowledged that there have been thousands of problems.

All those lights you have on there are systems which depend on wheel speed sensors. Could just be coincidence one of those has packed up. You'd need a code reader to be sure though. Definitely a worthwhile investment these days as it makes fault finding quite easy. Saying that for some manufacturers the generic code readers can't read the ABS codes so if you decide to buy one it''s worth seeking advice.

I would have thought if there was an issue with the glow plugs you would have noticed cold starting issues and / or the glow plug light staying on.

With regards to the recall letters, yes the use of DVLA logo and wording to make it look mandatory when it's actually not.

Could it not just be something has just failed on the car and nothing to do with the recall?

The recall would have updated the power train control module software which had nothing to do with the warnings you are getting.

As others have said I would suggest they are caused by a wheel speed sensor issue.

Unless they had the wheels off (I don't know why they would have) and damaged a sensor then I don't know how they would have caused it

I have now sold my car with the EA189 diesel engine but there was no way I was getting the update done.

Too many negative stories about the update and cruically too many stories like the OP's where they do the update and then wash their hands of any future issues your car has.

You'd be mad to get it done.

One of my customers got the same letter and took his car in for the update and as far as I know hasnt had any problems, but he came straight to me from the update with a list of supposed faults found to be needing repair whilst the update was being done which in my opinion was a total work of fiction.

This. Coincidentally a wheel speed sensor has failed after you have had the software update.
