I'm a bit confused how the supplying dealer has the new V5C number, is that info now available as part of an HPI these days?

No, as it goes to the registered keeper who is you, confirmed by receiving the "penalty letter"

You didn't brought it, you bought it:-)

What does this letter say? Have you actually been done for no tax? If so it's too late, you will be fined? Isn't the offence "Failing to declare a car SORN"? Or is there another offence of driving a car without valid VED, knowingly or not?

OP - was the car pre reg or a Demo?

Just a thought, it may have been on a Manufacturer deal where they were not allowed to sell it for maybe 3 or 6 months? So they taxed it in their name, but when the renewal came through, they transferred the V5 to you?

We had this with the OT's last car, had a winge (I really should have noticed the missing V5) and the Dealer stumped up for another 6 months for us as goodwill.

The letter basically said we were caught on a camera driving a sorn car! Which carries a up to £1000 fine and form to fill in about when car was sorn.
Not filled in as it's not sorn with a letter explaining

OK, take a step back and gather your thoughts, clearly it's getting to you.

If you were already fined then you would certainly know about it, it would be crystal clear.

Stick the letter up here as a photo or type it out. Is it anything like this:

Ideally you just need to call DVLA tomorrow and see what's what.

That's not right - the fine is up to £2,500 (or 5 times the chargeable duty, whichever is the greater) for using or keeping an unlicensed vehicle on a public road if there is a SORN declaration in effect.

I think I'd be speaking to DVLA as soon as possible and finding out what's going on.

Firstly, find out how the dealer knows your V5C number (they may not have sent it to the DVLA or retained the new keeper supplement by mistake). Then get on the phone to the DVLA about the lack of logbook. As you haven't got the NK supplement you'll have to pay £25 for a new one.

Was it a new or used car you bought from the dealership?
