I get it, and have many times thought about getting into a Tourer, but with the issues these cars throw up can't see past my E90 M3. 90% of the experience, DCT box, and other than actuators (and supposedly rod bearings) non of the woes.

None of the woes, except 2 of the biggest ones, including the one that requires an engine rebuild rofl

Actuators aren't a second mortgage issue with aftermarket repair and upgrades available. Rod bearings aren't a fait accompli on the S65 and "preventative" replacement can be done for £1,500 . No electronics woe's, no lunched flywheel's, clutches or gearboxes, etc.

Original statement stands.

Why go to the effort of sticking the model codes in the title, but not include the E61, and then use an E61 for the article thumbnail :P
Exactly my thought, then noticed the other pic of a model in the article is the cab, which I think is E64?

The vanos suffers from oil starvation. Get a proper engineer ( e.g Ray west at thruxton) to fit a bigger pipe between the two shafts

With well over 100 bhp per liter these N/A engines are very exotic and TBH I don't find a €3-4k bill around the 100k km ridiculous. Very few cars in the world have these numbers -however see how much these "others" set you back. Makes the M6 small potatoes.

I'm not sure I agree with the reliability concerns aimed at the E60 M5. I am an absolute M5 addict and the E60 version was my 6th version of M5's owned.
On first drive after delivery I do admit that I thought it felt more "fema" than my trusty old E39 M5 (166k miles and still a fab car.)
Over time the quirky/slowish g/box was accepted and thankfully the "is it a diesel mate ?" or "I think your tappets need adjusting mate" ... comments waned. Nothing compared to that Jekyll and Hyde persona and the scream of the V10 @ full chat. The car ran faultlessly till 198,460 miles, slightly more than any other M5 I have owned. Had it not been for a very small rubber O'ring on an injector I may still be driving it today.
Alas it was replaced by M5 no: 7.. a new F10 competition (592bhp) in 2016. It Is early days yet with only 66k on the clock but so far so good, I am very impressed with it. My secret to longevity and reliable M5's... ? Look after them with frequent new oil and loads of TLC !!
