I've seen loads of stuff clocked , I've seen people do it every 11 months or so , just before the mot and annual service

Seen the above to keep the miles down before its recorded anywhere , easier to do it consistantly annually rather than in one go

I've also seen people take out 8k a year (milage) leases and then rewind the milage every 10 months

I've also seen cars clocked , with the mot history showing a lower milage , dealers selling don't care , " it's a mistake bruv" or they just don't care if you check

Also seen dealers make milage mistakes in ads to encourage you to view it , or just a genuine mistake

Reminds me of all the blank service books you could buy and dealer stamps to stamp up your own service book

I don't condone or have done the above its all out there Though

Brilliantly blatant

What if the engine was replaced? I had that in my ST - it's technically on about 45,000 miles but the odometer reads 115,000.

But everything else has done 115,000 miles!

And we wonder why people would prefer to go & get a lease car over buying private.

Goes to show that you have to be so thorough when doing checks for a new car, just taking the piss with all this now.

I had it written in the service book that the engine was replaced on our Nissan at 48K miles, after it went in for the first service after buying it and they road tested without replacing the oil they'd drained...

Is there a way of searching old ebay ads to find something like this then?
Must be hundreds to trawl through?

I guess the only thing you could do would be to search, say "2012 bmw 640d", then tick "completed listings" then re-search.

I'd personally also check gumtree to see what comes up.

Also an mot history check and a full HPI check - neither of which would have shown anything untoward as they've clocked it back to just above the miles of the last MOT. Ringing a BMW dealer might help - to trace any service / maintenance work and check mileage.

Its a tough one.....

The MOT tester at the place I get my bike tested sometimes laughs at me for not doing many miles between MOTs.
I might get it clocked this year to add a few thousand miles on.

Sadly ebay changed how long they kept searchable stuff on their system for a few years ago. You used to be able to go back and look at ended listings quite a while but it's a few months now I think.

Rather than reporting it to AT or eBay, could the DVLA do anything if informed? Either that or the police?

Yep, mine too. Another argument, if one were needed, for verifying any claimed service history over the phone, or at the very least expecting to see accompanying invoices or proof of payment.

In BMW's case, service books are becoming a thing of the past anyway. I don't believe any of the F-series BMWs even come with them any more. Neither of my F30s did, and neither has my current F20. Service information is recorded centrally on a BMW database, and the invoice acts as visual "proof".

That said, I have sold three cars privately in the last couple of years, one at £9,000, and in none of the cases at all did the buyer even ask to see the service history. Joe Public doesn't care. I shudder to think at some of the deathtraps being driven about out there.

"These are real stamps as they have the ID Number, don't pay 100 plus for a fake one "

Nothing worse than a fake service book with fake stamps! Don't get conned by anyone else
- make sure it's a fake service book with real stamps

I previously sold my high-mileage AMG into the trade. it had ~193k on the clock. I got an email from a friend, about 2 years later, it was back up with only 60k for about triple the price.

a few year ago i put a deposit down on a fiesta for the misses, the car was advertised with 47K and FSH, all looked nice , the only thing that made me even suspect was the dealer said it was just from auction and the paperwork was to follow, i suspected this to be BS so called the auction house, (I'd seen the sticker in the car when looking) and after much BS about data protection laws with the fools there they tols be is was sold with no history and over 110k on it, reported to trader and to trading standards, and nothing was done.

Surprising the number of private owners who seemed to have lost their V5 but will be forwarded to you a few days later after the local Norwich car auctions. Its also amazing how the mileage seems to drop dramatically as well.
