I thought it was just me. Sorry, that Swift, much as I like an auto, just no. But then I can not think of any reason why someone would pay £6k for this. I suppose it's a time warp, maybe a museum, or if they remake Frost. https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1232117

People have money stacking up because they can't go on their annual holidays, and have time on their hands for browsing and what-iffing. Prices in hobby markets adapt accordingly.
And with bank interest rates heading to zero, apparently-appreciating 'classics' seem to be a good investment. Ker-ching, get it bought. It's a feedback cycle, because people see cars selling for increasing prices and want to get in on it...

I think the cars cited have become more popularly expensive as a result of young drivers now looking to cheap classics to pull down their premiums.
Even if the Mondeo had been £1000, it would still only be £1500 these days.

I just don't think there's a cheap retro market anymore
Cars that we would have described as 'retro' (late 80s/ early 90s) are now old enough and rare enough to be priced as 'classics'
I have a theory, in like 2010ish you could buy a car from 1990 quite cheap (BMW E30s, etc I bought a mint Volvo 480 around that time for £400) and even though it would have only been 20 years old at the time, it would still have looked 'retro' because design/safety standards/technology moved so rapidly in the 90s/00s
Compare that with now, the same 20 year old car at the bottom of it's deprecation curve would be something on a 51 plate, very few of those cars could be called 'retro' because car design hasn't changed as much (for example, the last few generations of Golf look identical)
This could be nonsense, but I was chatting to a friend with a similar taste the other day, and we were both cursing that we couldn't get these sort of cars at reasonable prices anymore

You can still get them cheap. I helped a mate collect a 205 CTI that he paid £800 for late last year, ran and drove with almost a year MOT on it. I had that £1000 Sierra which was pretty mint and my 405 too. I have noticed stuff like Imprezas are now going up, I could get a decent one for £900 a few years ago whereas now I can't even find a wagon for sale. I passed my test in one of those!I've had two escorts and one Orion from this era and I enjoyed owning them all. Aside from the 1.6 Ghia, I also had a rare 1100 CVH engined car (which was way quicker than you'd expect) and an Orion 1.6i Ghia.
Unfortunately, the engine in the Orion had an unplanned rapid disassembly. As money was tight and I needed to get back on the road urgently for work, I decided to throw in a 1.6 diesel lump that my friend had lying around at the back of his workshop, effectively building an Orion 1.6D Ghia. Once we tweaked the pump a bit, it made quite a nice car, actually. Sadly, the dreaded tinworm ate away the floor pan in the end.

I enjoy this type of story of mechanical skill and improvisation. It's about as far from my life and (lack of) talent as it's possible to be.
