Ah yeah I'm aware of that issue, but I've never previously heard of it happening in standard cars. Pretty crap if it does!

It's a known issue on the 190bhp Toyota 111r and (NA) Exige variants. The gearbox is made from cheesium.

No problem with mine so far and not heard of this happening with other cups either.

I don't believe Elise gearboxes have any inherent problems. Mine was perfect and was 218hp.

The one example I gave is a 5000mile 220 cup on its 3rd gearbox rebuild. The guy races in the Lotus speed series time trials, its a white car, I think a 2016 model. He wont be hard to track down, to prove what I am sayin.

I race a N/a exige in the Lotus elise trophy, the gear box is fine but did chew 3rd gear, in the 24 hour race of remembrance at Anglessey last year but in general is ok, it's the extra torque of the SC that kills them.

The race team I am with, used to run a S/C Lotus 211 in the Lotus Cup series, with 250hp. They went through two gearboxes per weekend, every weekend. They run sequential gearboxes now.

What went wrong with them? Usually Elise mechanical problems get plastered all over the various forums; I know a number have failed at higher states of tune but I wasn't aware of any failures on unmodified cars.
even when I was tracking I saw cars fail on track with 3rd gear gone !

It's nothing new or a surprise !

I know it's common on heavily modified cars, I just wasn't aware that people were hitting it on unmodified ones.

I can't say I'm surprised; Lotus are nothing if not consistent in their inability to test things properly. hehe

You need to be clearer here. Were you asking about Cup 380s or Sport 380s? I understood the reference to being 'sold out' was in relation to the former, and there isn't a single one listed in the PH classifieds. Sport 380s are in the classifieds
the CUP, dealers have bought the CUPS for stock !

I was told I could have a CUP no issue.

there is not a CUP listed yet as they have not made any yet lol you can bet all the main dealers will have 380Cup's for sale.

but as a Sport 380 loaded can be had for £63k one is better off with that and a few tweaks imo.

We should also consider the difference between purchase cost and depreciation. The last batch of Cup`s seem to heave held their value very well.

Talking of Lotus dealers buying stock, Komotec in Germany order all the current stock of 311`s from the factory last weekend in response to being asked, how many do you want...no hesitation!

You can bash Lotus all you like, but they generally make a great little product, and there is not much if anything else out there like them and they have done fantastically on a shoestring. Hopefully Geely can sort the lack of investment thing out...

I second this - I have no doubt it's been fraught and tense for them, perhaps at times still is, but the cars that have been launched under Gales' watch are proper, pure Lotus and it's a pleasure to drive every one for the clarity of purpose and excellence of development engineering they show.

Now just imagine what an all-new model range developed under this ethos could be like...

I.E.M NEW ESPRIT priced half that of the latest entry Ferrari with looks to rival it and performance on par with it, just like in the 90's when the Esprit was on performance par with the F355 and surpassing the 348!! Whenever introducing a friend to the Lotus Esprit I always referred to it as a British Ferrari.

I love the Elise but I think it's not right that they sell cars as track cars that are not up to the job of being tracked.

I was talking to a driver of an S3 cup (production spec) at Silverstone last week. He told me he replaced the gearbox 3 times at the previous Lotus Cup Europe meeting in a single weekend.

The supercharged cars (elise 1.8) are not adequate for track use out of the factory - FACT

unless of course one tootles around a circuit
