I share a Z4M coupe with my dad and bought it largely due to seeing the prices rise. My dad then went and separately bought a Z4M roadster a daily as he liked the S54 engine so much but wanted a rag top.

I have been looking at getting an E46 M3 as a daily for similar reasons and seeing the prices rise but today I seriously think my mind is changing towards buying a Z4Coupe 3.0si.

It looks like the prices are rising ion these as the Mcoupe becomes less affordable and the main difference with the M3 seems to be they look much cheaper to run, no massive subframe issues etc and 265hp is stil pretty good.

Anyone here run both the Z4M and the 3.0si coupe? and even the e46 m3. Interested to know the real difference and whether I will get fed up in the 3.0si not having an s54 under the bonnet?

A 3.0 manual coupe did £3000 over cap clean a couple of days ago in auction, think they are on the rise too
How much did it go for out of interest?

Sorry I can't help with that as I have never experienced anything with an S54 engine, but I love driving my E86 3.0si!

To get any idea of the real difference surely you need to drive one! laugh

Or find the cash to buy an M - plus the M-tax on every service item!

I have a 3.0si

Mine is the Sport with the M suspension

It is a lovely silky smooth free reving engine with loads of torque and loves to rev

I think it sounds good too, although maybe too muted for some

I've not driven a z4m but have driven the older M3 and prefer the si to that

I've driven mine back to back with a Cayman S and there isnt much in it on normal roads .. ultimately the Cayman is a little quicker and would leave the Zed at highly illegal speeds

I think the Si is a very underrated car and is one of the last of its kind

Mine is 290 a year to tax compared to over 500 for the M

Servicing at BMW is reasonable on their "old car" pricing. I just paid 350 for an Insp 2

Mine is still under the BMW warranty which is excellent value and far far cheaper than for an M

Insurance is far better than the M

I did look at the M when I bought my Si but when mine is prob 8/10ths of the M I couldn't see the value in the M with the huge gap in prices and running costs

I don't see them going stratospheric but they should hold their value methinks

Anyway each to their own hope my tuppence worth helps

Been looking at these since Christmas. RWD,decent BHP and I think they look beautiful I.e. cohesively designed if that makes sense. Balanced with lots of style. Considering everyone feels they are moving up in value, why are the same ones on fleabay for the last few months? I know one is yellow/gold sold by Brightwells then appears at dealer in Droitwich ( looks better in pictures....I looked at it). The ones advertised just don't seem to be selling.

I suspect it is like any car tipped as "collectible", there are a few genuinely nice cars with low miles that will make the money and sell quickly, whilst the majority of cars on the market aren't nearly as nice but the sellers are pricing close to the top end cars. Hence they don't sell, or certainly not quickly.

Re: the M vs 3.0si debate, I've not driven an M but the N52 in my coupe is certainly a cracking engine. Not as spine-tinglingly vocal as my last M engine which was an S38B36 in an e34 M5, but the N52 feels to have a better torque spread and much better economy but somehow just doesn't feel as special.

I owned a 3.0si Coupe then a Z4M...

I sold the 3 after just 4 months (but the M for over 2 years) as I just didn't like:

a) Awful electric steering with no feel
b) Open diff spinning up inside wheel everywhere - even on roundabouts

The 3 litre engine is a nice engine but completely different in character to the S54...it was the other things that completely put me off. The S54 is fireworks above 5000rpm, the N52 pulls from 2000-5500rpm. Chalk and cheese.

I had a 2004 E85 3.0i prior to the Z4MC, which I assume is the same engine as the E86 3.0si.
The driving dynamics of the E85 was much easier to live with on a day to day basis; lighter clutch, easier gear change and lighter steering (electric assist).
Cracking engine too, returning amazing fuel economy when required.
But the combination of the S54 and the driver input required to pilot the Z4MC is something else again.

The 2004 z4 would be pre facelift I think, that had the older 231bhp engine instead of the newer engine found in the facelift model.

I had an e46 m3 before I traded it in for a z4 coupe. The m engine is without a delight, but that alone wasn't enough for me to justify the addition running costs of the z4m. If however they'd built the z4m with the SMG gearbox, that definitely would have been worth it.

It's interesting now because early E89s are are in some cases cheaper than previous 3.0 coupes
Understandable i guess, given the relative rarity of the Z4 3.0 Coupe
I've noticed that too - long may the trend continue (seeing as I have a Z4 Coupe)! laugh
